Heliski Greenland
Despite being the world’s largest island, 3 quarters of Greenland is covered in ice. Much of what isn’t ice is mountains, which makes it a skiing paradise. Greenland is also a wild place though, which means you need the Heliski Greenland guides if you want to take advantage of everything possible on a visit.
Greenland is well known for its geothermal hotsprings. Yet, the mountain ranges that soar above this region in the arctic absolutely spectacular. Greenland is home to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world thanks to its northern latitude, steep mountains that line the coasts, and the consistent snowfall the creates a deep and stable snowpack which is less likely to avalanche than elsewhere.
Greenland is most famous for its fjords that are lined with mountains that rise as high as 3,200 meters above sea level. With a helicopter, those mountains turn into slopes with thousands of meters of skiable terrain. In some cases, you can ski all the way down from the summit to the seashore in one run! On top of that, Greenland is covered by the midnight sun in spring and early summer which means you have more than enough daylight to ski!
Of course, Greenland is massive, so traditional ski touring means you’ll miss out on most of the best skiing there. That’s where the Heliski Greenland guides come in.
Heliski Greenland: The Facts & FAQs
Heliski Greenland began in 2000 when several guides who had led clients all around the world started exploring Greenland. At the time, heliskiing had not been introduced to Greenland’s arctic region, so the founders established access to several untapped heliski areas that they still guide in today.
Heliski Greenland’s base of operations is on the southwestern coastline of Greenland where the temperatures stay moderate during the ski season, or between April and May. The best route to reach their base is from Copenhagen, which is just a four-hour flight away from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland’s international hub. After arriving in Greenland, you’ll be a short domestic flight away from hopping onto a B3 helicopter operated by Air Greenland pilots for your first day of heliskiing.
Heliski Greenland operates with groups as small as 3 to as large as 12, and average 8 to 12 drop-offs a day. They’ve also taken to the sea as well since they can often work around bad weather by accessing skiable territory via boat. If the weather allows for no skiing at all, then the guides also offer wildlife, fishing, and kayak tours for their guests.
When you’re not heliskiing, you’ll be staying on Maniitsoq Island in a 3-star hotel that offers dining and views of the town’s harbor. Guests can choose between three different 7-day packages that have different group sizes, but all three include access to a helicopter, speed boat, and accommodations at the hotel.
You’ll also enjoy local food like king crab, muskoxen, local spirits, wine, and coffee from the hotel’s kitchen. Plus, you can après there or in one of the town’s restaurants after your time on the slopes!
