Greenland Heli Skiing - A Destination Like No Other!
If you like chasing adventure just as much as powder while heliskiing, then heli skiing Greenland needs to be on your list! Greenland’s amazing fjords make it the perfect place for adventure loving heli-skiers.
You may know Greenland as the world’s largest island, but thanks to its location in the northern Atlantic it’s also filled with deep snow during spring when most other ski areas in the northern hemisphere are shutting down for the season. Plus, Greenland is home to tall peaks, glaciers that cover three quarters of the land, and other natural features that have created the ultimate outdoor playground for those seeking extreme fun. Of course, you’re interested in heliskiing though, not just exploring.
What Is It Like To Experience The Heli Skiing in Greenland?
EXTEME is the perfect way to describe Greenland heli skiing! And thanks to the quality of the snow, the local guides have exploring the island down to a near science. Due to Greenland’s far north location, a heliski trip can literally start at sea level in a fjord before you’re whisked up summits that rise as high as 3,200 meters. After that, you get to choose your line back to sea level crossing steep slopes, glaciers, and maybe even some unique wildlife as you ski through untouched snow. If you’re heliskiing near the coast you’ll also get the added advantage of regular precipitation that creates a heavy, solid snowpack.
Of course, Greenland isn’t all ski runs that drop from summit to sea. There are plenty of bowls, couloirs, and cliffs for you to have any type of run you’d like. Plus, if you’re heli skiing Greenland towards the end of the season then you’ll enjoy long days as the midnight sun takes over the sky.
It would be a mistake not to mention Greenland’s north, because that’s where arctic snow and wild mountains create some of the most unique skiing and snowboarding runs in the world. Although the snow in Greenland’s arctic regions is dryer than that along the coast, it makes for incredible skiing, especially between March and June when most skiing is winding down in the northern hemisphere.
Ready to ski Greenland? There are a few different ways you can get to it. Greenland’s international hub is in Kangerlussuaq, which is where most flights from Denmark will fly into. However, you can also fly into other destinations in Greenland from Iceland. After you arrive, you will travel to the town or village outside your guide’s heliskiing territory.
