Greenland Heli Skiing
One of the best parts of a heliski trip is experiencing the people and culture that are wild enough to thrive in places with steep slopes and deep snow. You’ll get no closer to Greenland’s culture, and the best skiing in the world, than you will with Greenland heliskiing.
Greenland Heliskiing: Facts & FAQ
Heliskiing Greenland means flying up from sea-level to summit in fantastic fjords that enjoy deep snow well into the northern hemisphere’s summer. The deep snow along Greenland’s coast makes for a stable surface that is less likely to avalanche than other areas, and with how long the sun stays in the sky during ski season (April-May), there is a unique mix of spring corn snow and powder based on where the sun is. That means you get to enjoy everything from powder to forgiving and fun spring snow while skiing down glaciers, couloirs, and bowls before taking a helicopter back to the top to do it all over again.
Does it sound too good to be true? The Greenland Heliskiing team will support you each step of the way so that your trip to Greenland feels like a dream.
In fact, the Greenland Heliskiing team have been doing just that for decades. In fact, guide Arne Hardenberg grew up skiing in Greenland and even competed in the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Thanks to the guides’ combined experience, their guests get to enjoy world class backcountry skiing with runs as long as 2000 meters while staying safe on Greenland’s wild slopes.
Another example of the Greenland Heliskiing team’s expertise is the fact that they chose to set up their operation in the village of Kangaamiut, which sits on a small island south of the Arctic Circle. Being close to the sea creates the stable snowpack we mentioned earlier, but the guides also chose Kangaamiut as their base since its northern location means the sun stays in the sky for nearly 20 hours during the spring.
Despite the remote location, getting to Kangaamiut is easier than you would think. Your adventure will begin in Copenhagen followed by a 4 ½ hour flight to Kangerlussuaaq in Greenland. After that, you’re just a short flight to Maniitsoq from being on your skis (or helicopter If the weather doesn’t allow flight) and heading towards your base in Kangaamiut.
Once in Kangaamiut you’ll check into a comfortable rented home included in your stay where a local host will cook you authentic meals as well as picnics for your time heliskiing. There is also a small store nearby where you can pick up any last-minute purchases.
From there you’ll hop on a AS350 B3 helicopter with room for four guests and head for the mountains. Greenland Heliskiing provides ABS avalanche bags, but guests will need to provide their own skis, harness, shovel, probe, and transceiver.
If the weather does not allow for heliskiing, then the guides are experienced enough to organize whale tours and other activities so that you can enjoy the most of your time in Greenland!
