Greenland is home to mountains that rise thousands of meters straight out of the sea, arctic tundra, and incredible geology that produces natural hot springs and kilometers of glaciers alike. It is also one of the rare places where latitude, terrain, and snow fall all align for perfect skiing conditions.
That’s why the guides at Arctic Heliskiing Greenland chose Greenland’s Ammassalik region and its 250,000 kilometers of terrain, much of it the eastern coastline, for their Greenland heliskiing destination. Of course, it makes sense that Arctic Heliskiing Greenland chose the optimal location from which to operate for heliskiing, since they’ve skied and guided all over the world.
When precipitation hits land from the sea, it drops heavy snow during the cold winters. As that snow accumulates, it settles to create a solid and stable base that remains safe to ski, even when the slope turns steep. When spring rolls around, that base remains solid, and the moderate temperatures turn Greenland’s coastline into a heliskiing heaven that everyone should experience at least once.
Arctic Heliskiing Greenland was founded by Jökull Bergmann and his family after he spent years guiding in the mountains of British Columbia. The family originally set up their Arctic heli skiing operation on Iceland’s Troll Peninsula. But soon, "JB" simultaneously expanded to offer packages in Greenland too, with the help of Kevin Boekholt.
Today, three generations make up the Arctic Heliskiing Greenland team, and as soon as you arrive you’ll be treated like family too.
After a short avalanche training, which is standard in the industry, you’ll hop in your A-Star, flown by Air Greenland pilots, to begin your time on the snow.
If the weather doesn’t allow for heliskiing, then the guides will plan other excursions such as ski touring, whale watching, and sea angling. Apparently, no one is anxious to go searching for polar bears!
