North Cascade Heli
With exclusive access to a very unique (and large) area of terrain on the Eastern side of the Cascade Range in Washington State, North Cascade Heli is truly a time-tested, hidden gem in the heliskiing industry.
You'll only find small group heliskiing here: 2-3 groups of 4 skiers and 1 guide, flying in an A-Star and not much waiting. You'll be pleasantly surprised with their exceptional terrain, their team of highly qualified guides and the unparalleled experience they deliver. It's unique - very cool.
Larger, more "corporate" heliskiing companies, frequently found further North in British Columbia are known for flying in droves of people to their remote lodges. They often present a bit different vibe...a more controlled experience - an example would be "farming" their tenure...("Hey, keep your lines tighter, ok!")...ever hear that?
It's very unlikely that you'll hear any such comments from the heliskiing guides at NCH...they keep it low-key...pretty chill...and they have been doing it that way since 1989. I think their culture and the experience they deliver all stems from their ownership.
Although owner Paul Butler introduced himself to me, I didn't get the chance to talk to him much. The other owner Ken Brooks appeared to more active throughout their "heli barn," interacting with guests, working on skis and giving safety presentations about the aircraft, prior to lift-off.
As I do with all small operations, I asked Ken, "What do enjoy the most about this?" He put it pretty simply, "I love to see our guests happy, and I love to ski & snowboard." Then he gave me this unassuming look with a shoulder shrug 🙂 It's pretty obvious, after more than 30 years as an owner, operator, guide, back country enthusiast, this is what Ken is meant to be doing!
I was fortunate enough to join this operator for three excellent days in the first week of March, 2024. The last minute surgical strike mission paid off in huge dividends, netting 20 nearly flawless blue bird powder runs on days two & three. Ryan Devane, who runs the front office, took this reservation at nine days in advance. He handled two quick (and informative) calls from me on a Saturday morning - and then I was fully booked...quickly!
Although he was very busy tending to a complement of 12-20 guests each day, I ended up having lots of interaction with Ryan. He and his associate Chris are both happy and congenial staff members, doing a terrific job serving the business and their NCH clients. I got the opportunity to ask Chris what his favorite thing about this gig was. Chris said, "It's the ENERGY around this place. Everyone is so amped to be here!" (and I may be paraphrasing here): "All of our skiers & boarders are here to have an incredible time...they're always pumped up!" I couldn't agree with Chris more...it's an infectious, elevating atmosphere, especially after classic blue bird powder days...and I was very fortunate to be treated to a couple in a row!
It's tough not to get an intoxicating "heli-stoke" when your taxi lands RIGHT OUTSIDE "the barn's" back door! Check it out:

North Cascade Heli - Stuff You Should Know!
Ultimately, your destination is the "heli-barn," North Cascade Heli's base of operations. It's located in the interior of the Freestone Inn & Cabins property on the Wilson Ranch, in Mazama WA. It truly is at the end of the road, because coming from the East side, SR20 closes every winter, and the ranch is somewhere near that terminus point.
If you're arriving here at night like I did, the GPS appeared to be VERY reliable...it won't "steer you wrong!" Ha! I drove the last hour and a half in the dark. Without the accurate GPS, I would have been blindfolded in the dark!
You'll know you are getting close when you drive by Hanks Harvest Foods in Twisp, nine miles from Winthrop. From Winthrop, it's another 15 miles to the Freestone Inn & Cabins. The heli-barn is right in the middle of the Freestone Inn property, as you can see on the map. The "P" on the map, next to the heli-pad, actually IS the barn and Parking surrounds it. But you'll likely be coming in at night, to prep for the next day's skiing, as I did. SEE ACCOMODATIONS!
In general, you have two main airport options. Seattle International Airport is a 5-hour drive from Mazama, where you'll have to traverse Snoqualmie Pass (at 2726 ft.). Coming from Spokane will take 3.5 to four hours. Optionally, you can fly to the smaller airport in Wenatchee, but this will only cut your driving time down to three hours.
I have to say, the drive across the state on the 2 -> 174 -> 17 -> SR20 from Spokane and back was really easy, and the whole Methow Valley, which I witnessed in the sunshine on my return...is gorgeous!
When renting a car, a AWD or 4x4 is highly recommended. When renting in Spokane, the Thrifty agent told me that nearly all their cars are AWD.
Winthrop has an Airport if you have your own plane!
North Cascade Heli Skiing does not provide accommodations like many other operators. The advantage here is that you are not confined to a remote lodge with strangers. Mazama, Winthrop and the Methow Valley is a popular recreation area in the North Cascade Range and has a variety of lodging options.
Here's where I stayed:
Freestone Inn: The 120-acre Wilson Ranch features a modern, yet classic lodge with a log-framed design, equipped with 12-15 rooms / suites, known as the Freestone Inn. Additionally, the fully equipped cabins are also a quality option, and each can be VERY different! (See below.) These two options are by far the most popular lodging choice, and I stayed at both! The Inn was not available for one of my nights, so for the first two nights, I stayed in Cabin #2, also known as The Creekside Bunkhouse. You can see it's location here, labeled "2" - a right turn off of Early Winters Drive, right across from the heli-pad, on the the Freestone Inn map.
In retrospect, here's where my booking process got a little confusing, but the result (after triangulating maps) was perfect! First, I booked a room at the Inn with a phone call. I also reviewed the Freestone Inn map. On the Freestone Inn website, I could have gone past the Accommodations Tab (or scroll way down on the Rooms page), and probably reserved the same cabin from their Reservations Tab. Instead, (at Ryan's recommendation, I looked up the Inn at Mazama, and I located the Creekside Bunkhouse cabin from their site...and zeroed in from their map, a cabin that was closest to the heli-pad - bingo! I booked the cabin online from the Inn at Mazama site.
From the Inn at Mazama website, it wasn't obvious to me (without a lot more online homework), that the Creekside Bunkhouse was cabin #2 on the Freestone Map. It absolutely IS #2 on that map. All the cabins (surrounding the heli-barn) are labeled 1-15.
There are better pics online of The Creekside Bunkhouse here. It was actually a warm, charming bungalow, right next to the "babbling" creek - very nice! (See video) I would stay there again.
Here's the BIG difference between the two websites. There are 15 cabins around the loop on the Freestone site. THERE ARE AS MANY AS 55 Cabins throughout the Methow Valley, available for rent on the Inn at Mazama & Cabins of The Methow website. (2nd to last link above.)
Typical, right? This is how the "web" works...to cast the net, eh?
On nights 3 & 4, I stayed in a king room in the Freestone Inn. I was fortunate enough to meet Honey at the front desk (who paused her conversation with her brother named Rowdy!) Later, she was sitting in the lounge with Marvin, the General Manager - very sweet, down-to-earth people. Because it was midweek and not quite spring, I was their ONLY guest! Seriously...I had the whole Inn to myself! I can't recall how the conversation started, but Honey, Marv & started talking about GHOSTS...and the history behind this place, the Wilson Ranch, settled by none other than JACK!
Jack Wilson had the vision, fortitude and courage (and the support of his wife Elsie) to leave his job building the Golden Gate Bridge and settle in the Methow Valley. Jack built six of the original cabins on the property, which INCLUDED the Creekside Bunkhouse! Jack also created the lake, which would then be the backdrop for the Freestone Inn. He created a very well-known business of guiding visitors on packhorse trips, hunting, fishing, and camping in the North Cascades.
Honey & Marv gave me an earful of their experiences about "seeing" the ghost of Jack in and around the Freestone Inn. The stories were pretty captivating, and they could tell I was devouring them with a smile! Naturally, I shared a couple of my own. 🙂 Later, I crossed the parking lot to "Jack's Hut," the pizza place on the property - great pizza! Two employees, one friend (who I later ran into again at the Pub) and three other patrons were there. Crossing the property, on the way back to the Inn, I couldn't help but think about Jack Nicholson in Steven King's classic - The Shining. I sent this amusing video (below) to my wife, then I went to The Old Schoolhouse Brewery (aka The Mazama Pub) for the third night in a row, to buy some Rotor Wash IPA, to take home!
Just in case you'd like some other options! 🙂
Additional Accommodations:
- Sun Mountain Lodge: A good second option, Sun Mountain Lodge is near Winthrop and is a bit more refined, while also offering ample additional activities like XC skiing and horseback riding.
- Observatory Inn: If you’re looking for a more toned-down lodging option, the Observatory Inn is a great choice. North Cascade Heli guests may receive 10% off.
If you're not familiar with the Cascades, (and I wasn't), North Cascade Heli has surprisingly challenging and variable terrain! The topography is seriously rugged - very vertical, jutting peaks! SEE! 🙂 Certainly you can't find any similar Landing Zones like this at at any resort. Of course I was jacked on on day #2 - TOTAL BLUE BIRD...this was the approach to the first drop - a nice narrow ridge at the top of a bowl!
Their unique tenure is situated at a nice, high altitude in the North Cascades Mountains, found in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. You take off from the heli-barn at The Wilson Ranch, at slightly over 2000ft, and land anywhere around 7,000 to 9,000 feet. On average, each run will be a couple thousand feet of descent. Boasting a 300,000-acre tenure, my three days included a healthy variety of terrain. We entered bowls from 45 (ish) degree, narrow chutes and also dropped in from easy cornices. We also skied a really cool couloir that emptied into some fantastic big mountain turns! There were fields of low angle pillows to play with...and then my favorites...TREES! Yep, the tree skiing here is cool - a bit different, but super fun!
I didn't experience any classic old growth forests with perfectly spaced Douglass firs and pines. There are some of those trees, but as you can see, I was having a blast "running gates" through the larch trees! The mixture and variety of trees made it all that much more playful, and I search for a tree-line EVERY time!
This clip below is most of our first run. We dropped 2000 ft. quickly...EFFORTLESSLY...in perfect shin deep+ dry, empty powder fields.
You may often yearn for the steep & deep...don't we all?
But when the weather is PERFECT...and the snow is PERFECT...sometimes the powder depth becomes less important. Then the decent is really about the surreal experience of your turns just blending into the grace and beauty of the snow-scape.
"No more resort skiing....EVER!" (And don't forget to BREATHE!)
One their site, NCH describes six distinct regions of terrain which make up their tenure. So you get to sample big alpine bowls, couloirs, chutes, pillows and glades.
What more could you ask for?
The pitch (from which the helicopter is still perched) is STEEP. A nice drop in!
A North Cascade Heli-Skier's Perfect Day:

- Eat GREAT food (like Mexican Seabass) - yum...drink superb craft beer (more Rotor Wash IPA or...I loved their Nitro Porter) and talk more heliskiing with your tribe!
- Rinse & Repeat this day until satisfied!
As I mentioned earlier on this page, Ryan, who handles the front office made it ridiculously easy to book!
North Cascade Heli breaks it down to the simple...it's essentially a "day-heli" operation. I skied for three days - pretty easy - 1 Day heli X 3! They offer a little discount for multiple days.
Each day of heliskiing includes 8 guaranteed runs and a credit of the guarantee isn't met. As is usually the case with heliskiing operators, they offer "extra laps" for (currently) a great price of $125/run. My first day was only three runs due to weather, but I got in 11 + 9 runs in the next two days, for a three day total of 23 runs! I have a 1 run credit to draw me back next year!
In the heli-barn they have a whole armada of complimentary K2 powder skies, including Powabungas, Reckoners, Hellbents, Mindbenders and Pontoons with an assortment of widths and lengths. I brought my DPS Pagoda 112s, because I really love the playfulness in the trees & quickness in the chutes. Nearly all of their guests use the K2s.
My Pagodas were picking up a little snow on the bases, and the staff was totally on top of it. Josh, my guide for day 2 & 3, was kind enough to pull out his tool kit and scrape them while up on the mountain, and then they they hot waxed my skies for day 3 - thx guys!
Of course you're properly outfitted with complete avalanche equipment, and a packed sack lunch, including your choice of protein or veggie + chips, a cookie and a mint - all from the world famous Mazama Store! Their sandwiches have home-made sourdough bread and are killer - BIG - a meal!
Chris said they average 10 down days a season (from mid Jan - mid March). Just set your expectations realistically...this is heliskiing in the dead of winter. Be flexible and stay stoked! Maybe you'll get a couple blue bird days like I did and have the time of your life!
Book a Trip With North Cascade Heli Today!
North Cascade Heli skiing offers 300,000 acres of exclusive terrain access in a lesser known paradise for heli skiing in Washington. Unlike some operators to the North in B.C., who literally fly dozen's & dozen's & dozen's of guests each day, NCH keeps it on the downlow. Not only do they max out at 20 heli-skiers / day with two A-Star aircraft, they deliver the goods with a "special heli-opps personality," that I have only witnessed here at North Cascade.
In some sports circles, it is said, "Those who know, GO!" I believe this is one of those circumstances.
Their small-group heliskiing, a staff with a personal touch and guides with a super chill attitude (yet very professional), left me with a lasting, good-tasting vibe...I wanted more...
So I'll be back!
