Turkey Heliski Review
Contributors Tory and Barney Phillips HAVE skied this operator and report back that, "It was awesome!"
"The operation is totally professional with the helicopters operated by Air Zermatt. The Heli Ski Pro destination in Turkey has been operating for 20 years. The base is at a four star hotel in Aydar which is a summer resort in the Kackar mountain range in the eastern part of Turkey near Rize and the Black Sea and not too far from the border with Georgia.
"The terrain is broad, open slopes with good long pitches. We skied all seven days in both powder and corn snow."
Barney and his daughter Tory Phillips enjoy the Kackar Mountain Range in Turkey
Where can you find heavy precipitation coming off the Black Sea, a massive mountain range, and a reputable heli skiing operator? Look no further than Turkey Heliski and their 5,000 square kilometer tenure in Northeast Turkey.
Turkey Heliski has access to more than 400 runs and summits that reach to altitudes of 3,900 meters. On top of the terrain, the Black Sea provides heavy snowfall which creates a reliable snowpack.
Some of the lines drop as far as 1,200 meters from summit to tree line. Other lines start at steep summits and drop into powder bowls where you’ll burn off your speed with unforgettable turns. With that much terrain and snow, you’ll need a helicopter to enjoy it all. Turkey Heliski has partnered with Air Zermatt to provide that ultimate ski lift!
Helpful Tips & Feedback About Turkey Heliski
Typically you will fly to Istanbul, then to Rize. There are plenty of flights to Istanbul which is a huge international hub, but most flights from the US require a stop somewhere in Europe.
We flew Turkish Airlines which is highly rated and seemingly the only carrier with direct flights from the New York area to Istanbul. The flight to Rize on Turkish Airlines was a two hour flight. Rize is a substantial city and summer resort location. The two hour bus ride in a very nice van was comfortable, all the way to to the Hotel.
Flying back from Rize we were able to check luggage all the way back to New York, JFK.
We had not been been to Turkey before so it was all new to us, but very much first world experience, i.e. hotels, transfers, lodging etc. were all high end - Good to know, right!?
You gotta love the heli-pad right out your back door!
Turkey Heliski has been guiding in this region since 2003. They have courteous and professional operations.
Their guides meet guests as soon as they arrive in Istanbul. From there, they help them make the 2-hour transfer to the village of Ayder where guests check into the scenic Hotel Hasimoglu. Renovated in 2016, The Hasimoglu has 70 beautiful rooms and terrific views! It’s also home to massage rooms, a lounge, bar, and the heli-pad out back where you’ll take off from.
"Rooms and amenities are what you would expect at a four star hotel. There was a spa and the deck outside in good weather was very pleasant as it and the hotel overlooked a stream. Big buffet at breakfast and dinner. You packed your own lunch unless you returned to the hotel in time for lunch. Food at the buffets was excellent, much variety and plentiful," said Barney.
On top of unique facilities, the staff is dedicated to giving you an exceptional experience. For example, the massage therapists are trained in physiotherapy, acupuncture, reflexology, and sport specific therapy to keep your body in prime skiing conditions. Plus, the river running beside the hotel will keep your mind just as relaxed as your muscles!
You’ll take off in a Ecureuil B3 (A-Star) helicopter in groups of four with one guide, and your first drop is only 5 minutes away from the hotel!
While your with Turkey Heliski, you’ll have guides with a diverse range of experience to keep you safe and on the best lines in the Kaçkar Mountains. They’ve guided in Turkey for years, but they’ve also guided all over the world, and some are even Himalayan specialists and pilots of their own.
All that experience means that when you heliski Turkey you’ll have nearly every different type of skiing expertise to back you up.
You won’t have to worry about bringing safety gear: an airbag, shovel, probe and transceiver. All that will be provided by the Turkey Heliski guides, and you can rent skis and snowboards designed for the off-piste powder you’ll enjoy while you're carving up the steep and deep!
That experience means that the guides can also provide alternate experiences to heliskiing if the weather doesn’t allow for flying.

"We visited Istanbul for three days, which we highly recommend for first time travelers to Turkey.
"The other great thing about the trip was both the guides and the other clients, very diverse, (many countries and nationalities represented), very social and all dedicated skiers," said Barney.
A sugar coating on top of all that Turkey Heliski has to offer, know that the nearby village of Petran has deep roots in the history of snowboarding. You can explore that lore on the hills outside the scenic town!
Although once you see the mountains outside of Ayder, you may not want to leave for anywhere else!
