Heliski Guides Sweden

PlaceholderHeli Ski Guides Sweden is based in Abisko, Lapland in the northernmost part of Sweden.  Located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, it is home to reindeer, arctic fox and huskies, as well as the 50 or so human permanent residents who call the small, magical village home.   It is also arguably the best place in Scandinavia to see the Northern Lights.

IFMGA guide and owner, Stefan Palm, together with his wife Pia are the operators of Heli Ski Guides.  They have an exclusive agreement with the Abisko Mountain Lodge and are the sole heli ski operation in Abisko during April and May.

With over 5000 square meters of mountain peaks in Lapland, you will ski above the tree line with peaks up to 2100 meters high.  Starting at sea level, the runs are not only long, but you and your group will be the only ones there.

All trips are custom designed and private with 3-4 skiiers per helicopter.

Facts & FAQ

Getting There

Most will fly into Stockholm's Arianda International Airport.  From there, you can take a 3 hour domestic flight to Kiruna in Sweden's Lapland.  Kiruna is about  a 1.5 hour drive to the village of Abisko.

Packages and Accommodations

During the months of April and May, Heli Ski Guides Sweden has partnered the Abisko Mountain Lodge to provide the best accommodations available in Abisko.  The cozy lodge has 20 rooms and includes a bar, a lounge area, a sauna and a massage room.  It also boasts one of the best restaurants in Northern Sweden.

The restaurant at the Abisko Mountain Lodge will provide all meals on your trip.  You can expect 3 course dinners with locally sourced ingredients including reindeer meat, fresh fish from the town's rivers and streams, and hand-picked fresh berries.  A hot lunch will be provided on the helicopter and will include fresh baked bread!  And each morning, a large breakfast buffet in the Lodge Restaurant awaits you.  The bar area offers a unique selection of beers and wines and you can relax in the large lounge area around a wood burning stove.

Heli Ski Guides Sweden offers totally customizable packages depending on your group size and ski ability.  The company uses B3 and B4 helicopters from a company in Arjeplog, Sweden.

The Private package is for groups of 4-5 with a IFMGA certified guide, for anywhere between 2-7 days.  Together as a group, you decide where and when to ski, depending on weather conditions.  You can also decide when to start each day, how long to go for, and when to stop.  And in the Land of the Midnight Sun, you can always start later in the day and ski late into the evening.

The Semi-Private package is for 8-10 people who can be divided into smaller groups of 4-5.  Heli Ski Guides Sweden will match skiier strengths and speed in each group.

The "Explore" package is truly a unique opportunity to create a once-in-a-lifetime heli ski adventure.  You will pack a small overnight bag and the Heli Ski Guides Sweden team will pack the food, and off you will go to explore and find untouched ski runs in the wilderness.  You will ski a different place each day and sleep somewhere new each night.  Truly, an extreme and exclusive heli ski opportunity.

Tenure and Terrain

Lapland has the 10 highest peaks in Sweden, most just south of Riksgransen, about 25 minutes away from Abisko, near the border of Norway. And with a 5000 square meters of wilderness, you will ski above the tree line in Alpine terrain with runs averaging about 800 m of vertical descent. There are no hills in this area of Sweden, just mountains! Your heli pilot and your guide will find the best runs for your group, from narrow gutters and large runs to more gentle running slopes.  And as Heli Ski Guides Sweden is the only heli ski operator in Abisko, you will take off towards the best weather conditions with no other skiiers around.

Both B3 and B4 helicopters are used to get your group to the mountain quickly.  And you will board your helicopter right outside the Abisko Mountain Lodge.

Things To Do on No-Fly Days
If weather grounds the helicopters during your stay, the towns of Abisko and Kiruna offer other enticing activities to keep you busy in the down time. Consider a morning hike in Abisko National Park to explore the Abisko River Delta, ancient birch forests and Arctic tundra, including the incredible Lake Tornetrask.  You might be lucky to see the local wildlife in the area, including reindeer, the arctic fox and even a Scandanavian moose.  Dogsledding to Kiruna is another unforgettable activity.  Half way through the dog sled tour, you will stop for a hot cup of coffee or tea and a steaming hot cinnamon roll where you can get to know the dogs and play with them. In Kiruna, you can visit the world famous ICEHOTEL with its amazing ICEBAR, ICECHURCH and ICESUITES.  You can also visit the local indigenious population of the Sami people at the open-air museum where you will learn about Sami culture and lifestyle and even feed the reindeer with Arctic moss.
