Pyrenees Heliski
The Pyrenees range divides France from Spain. Operating in this range, the team at Pyrenees Heliski has the expertise to facilitate a heli skiing trip in a region that many skiers may consider the most scenic mountains in Europe.
If you want to heli ski in Spain, then there is no better place to go than the Val d’Aran where Pyrenees Heliski is based. More specifically, they are in Betren, a village located in the Vielha e Mijaran, in the Val d'Aran.
The scenic Pyrenees mountains should encourage your stoke! Spain’s first single chair lift was built in the heart of Val d’Aran, due to its slopes and heavy snowfall.
This significant snowfall turns the area into a winter wonderland where everything from dog sledding to heli skiing is possible. In fact, the snowfall is so heavy that until 1948, when a tunnel was built through the mountains, Val d’Aran was isolated from most other regions.
Facts & FAQ
The Pyrenees Heliski team has been guiding in the Pyrenees since 2008.
But their experience in the region goes back much further, since many are natives who grew up skiing the area. In fact, two members of the team, George Robbi and Eduardo Gonzales, have been studying the snow and avalanches in the region for more than 45 years. This discipline of studying snow is called "Nivology."
Their expertise will help you find the best powder stashes and lines possible when heli skiing in Spain, while keeping you safe.
Their industry experience seems to have forged an expansion story because the same operator appears to run Turkey Heliski.
Thanks to its proximity to most of Europe, getting to the Pyrenees is part of the fun. You can fly into Toulouse France, Barcelona, or Madrid and reach the Val d’Aran within a day. If you book a 3 or 5 day package, then the guides will meet you at Toulouse and transfer you to your lodgings.
Your base camp will be in the town of Betren, where the Pyrenees Heliski team has entrenched infrastructure to support their operations.
They have partnerships with most hotels in the valley. This includes small boutique hotels to 5-star luxury accommodations that are included in your heliski package, and priced accordingly. After you arrive, and then begin preparations for your first lift, you’ll be briefed on the operations of the helicopter and given the avalanche safety gear required for heli skiing.
Once the group is ready, you’ll lift off in an Ecureuil B3 (A-Star) helicopter with four guests and one guide.
Although the mountains are large, thanks to the location of the base of operations, the helicopter rides are short because the terrain is immediately accessible. This convenient location provides you more time to enjoy the heli skiing and magnificent views!
As we say in the industry, lunches from the "heli-deli" come with packages of 3 days or more.
