Facts & FAQ
Mt. Cook is one of the more difficult to get to operators in New Zealand. There is no major airport in the region, meaning you’ll need to find a way to get there once you arrive. Most skiers will fly into Queenstown Airport and rent a car. The drive from the airport to Mt. Cook village is approximately 3 hours, but quite straightforward.
Once you’ve arrived at your accommodations in Mt. Cook, this operator will provide you with transportation to the helipad at the small Mt. Cook Airport. If you choose to stay in Queenstown or Wanaka, certain packages will facilitate travel.
Mt. Cook Heliski does not provide lodging to its guests. However, there is no shortage of places to stay in the region. Mt. Cook Village is home to an assortment of hotels and resorts, all of which have comfortable amenities.
Aoraki Court Motel is a more affordable option for budget-conscious travelers, whereas Mount Cook Lodge and The Hermitage are more upscale options.
Mt. Cook Heli has exclusive access to terrain in Aoraki National Park, a region dotted with glacial, high-alpine features. In addition to the park, there are over 8 different mountain ranges to explore. Their tenure spans east to west, meaning every single New Zealand storm drops powder there. The variety in glaciation provides an assortment of unique lines and descents that never gets old.
Extreme ability is not required to ski with Mt. Cook heli. This operator accommodates everyone. From beginners with zero physical fitness to experts in peak condition, they’ll be able to cater a tour to meet your skiing needs.
Much like other New Zealand heliskiing operators, Mt. Cook offers single-day packages for people who just want a taste of the action. While they don’t offer alternative activities like cat skiing, they do start every morning with a wake-up call that lets you know if the day’s adventure is on. All packages are led by Alpine Guides and flown by The Helicopter Line. You’ll have the selection of these packages:
- 5 Run Day: Their classic package, the 5 run heliskiing day involves 3 runs before lunch, and two after.
- Private Charter: If you value exclusive access, the private package features one personal guide per four skiers, private use of a helicopter, and 2 hours of guaranteed flight time.
- Heliskiing from Wanaka or Queenstown: If you’re staying in one of these ski towns instead of Mt. Cook, this operator can pick you up in a helicopter and bring you to your helipad. Additional charges apply.
Mt. Cook Heliski differs from other nearby operators largely because of its access to exclusive terrain. If you’re seeking a more remote backcountry landscape to explore, but still want easy access to ski town amenities, you’ll be more than satisfied booking a trip with this company.
