Facts & FAQ
Heli Guides Ollomont are part of the large Heli Guides team that has been guiding all over the Alps for over 30 years.
With a developed management team and over 50 guides, they appear to have the experience to pride the obvious safety that a heli-skier would expect while in the backcountry.
When heli skiing around the Aosta Valley, they keep their groups small with only 4 guests with one guide, typically flying an A-Star. With small group heli skiing, experienced guides are able to quickly assess the group's collective skiing ability and focus their landing zones and runs to appropriately accommodate their guest's desires.
This doesn't always happen with large groups. I've heard nightmare stories about one skier slowing a group of ten.
At 4,314 meters, the Combin de Grafeneire (Grand Combin) massif is an excellent spot from which to design your heli skiing day and the runs you'll make.
You'll begin your day at 1550 m, in the town of Glacier in the municipality of Ollomont (I), and the first flight will be to the 3518 m of Mont Gelé.
The terrain is varied, presenting open slopes as will as narrow, steep lines, so the guides can accommodate either desire for the skill level of the group.
Peaks such as Crou de Bleintse, LeSonadon, Tete du Filon, of course Mont Gelé, and the iconic Col Champillon could be on your list of potential destination lading zones.
The most important aspect of the day is to allow the guides to find the proper snow exposure, so the snow conditions on which the skiers will take advantage of can be optimized for the experience. Essentially, choosing the right run, based on sun exposure and snow pack conditions make all the difference for the day!
If you're ready to head for Ollomont, then the first step is to book a flight to either Geneva, Switzerland or Turin, Italy.
From Geneva, it's about 168km or two hours and 20 minutes by car. From Turin, it's 131km or about an hour and a half drive.
Once you get to Ollomont which is just 10km north of Aosta, you’ll check into La Grandze de François which combines rustic charm with stunning views of the mountains you’ll be skiing down, after you meet with your guides.
During the safety briefing, the guides will provide you with your avalanche safety equipment including an airbag, transceiver, shovel, and probe.
If you didn’t bring your own skis then the Heli Guides Ollomont staff will also help you rent powder skis from a nearby shop, so that you can get a discounted rate, thanks to their connections in the Ollomont area.
Once you’ve had your safety briefing it’s time to board an Airbus AS 350 Ecureuil B3 (A-Star) helicopter for the lift off to one of your landing zones.
