Heli Guides Courmayeur
The amount of time and faith you must invest in order to go heli skiing can tower over the very mountains you ski down! After all, you can travel across the world to ski only for bad weather to keep you from ever touching the snow. (That's a fact. I've seen it more than once.) Yet, when the snow, weather, and terrain line-up, a single day of heli-skiing can be so rewarding that you literally walk away a different person. And there’s nothing that rewards heli skiers more for their dedication than a trip with the Heli Guides Courmayeur team.
Courmayeur is a gorgeous ski village which resides in the shadow of Mont Blanc, the Alps highest peak, at 4810 meters! This charming Italian community is home to the longest lift serviced ski run in the world in the Vallée Blanche Descent.
Put this on your "bucket-list!" After a cable car ride from Entréves, this off-piste marathon run begins at Punta Helbronner (3466m), 3km N.E of Mont Blanc. It then undulates for at least 18 kilometers along the Mer de Glace glacier and ends in Chamonix, a four to five hour descent! Oh yeah!
If you're skiing with Heli Guides Courmayeur, this could be a great additional skiing adventure!
Facts & FAQ For Courmayeur
The founders at Heli Guides state that they have been guiding in the Alps for more than 30 years.
Expanding to twelve different locations to chose from, they appear to be the go-to operator in the Alps. Although they know their terrain intimately, it's a fair guess that most of their guides have also guided all over Europe and other parts of the globe. In the backcountry, experience keeps you safe - period. Heli skiing guides make a science out of evaluating snow pack and stability every day.
Experience also means you have the best chance of finding the best terrain to match your goals and style.
The Alps rise high above the very "ski obsessed countries" of France, Switzerland and Italy. I think they are (rightfully so) obsessed with the party! Right? What a fantastic environment in which to enjoy natural beauty, skiing and world-famous après!
In Courmayeur, you'll be heliskiing in the shadows of Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), which as the highest mountain in the Alps, rises to an elevation of 15,777 feet or 4810 meters. Don't plan on skiing from the top of Mont Blanc! Your heli skiing base is at 1,200 meters with the highest landing zone from your A-star helicopter at about 3,800 meters, where the views are obviously phenomenal! From there you can descend on some very long 2000 meter runs!
Because heliskiing is illegal in France, those wanting to heliski Mont Blanc have Courmayeur as their only choice. Thanks to how close Courmayeur is to Chamonix, it’s also easy to stay in Chamonix, drive over the border into Courmayeur and then take off with the Heli Guides Courmayeur team.
Ready to go heli skiing in Europe near 15,000 feet? We're kidding, but let's get to Courmayeur! To do that you've got to hop on a plane to Geneva, which is the closest international airport to Courmayeur, Italy. From there, it’s a 113km or about an hour and a half drive South East to Courmayeur. Another route is about the same distance, Fly into Turin International Airport and drive North West for 151km or about an hour and 45 min to Courmayeur. It may just be a question of if you want to come through France or not.
Once in Courmayeur you’ll enjoy the ultimate high altitude skiing and some of the most iconic descents in all of Europe.
Guests have several options for where to stay, but the Heli Guides team recommends staying at the beautiful Gran Baita Hotel, with its spectacular spa and wellness center, where you’ll enjoy beautiful rooms and a relaxing spa. It's an ideal hotel for a relaxing stay after a day of heliskiing!
Your package includes your avalanche safety equipment as well as a discount on powder skis or snowboard rentals, if you need them.
In terms of choosing which package is right for you, Heli Guides has a unique system that allows you to choose your trip based on how many vertical meters you want to ski and how many days you’ll do it in. It presents very logical choices.
For example, if your a powder-hound than "needs" at least 10,000 vertical meters, then they present you with a 4 day program.
I'll bet you could do that in TWO days, right? I could, if they'd fly me!
