Kashmir Heliski

(kashnir Heliski) Pexels Bijay Chaurasia 13241480.great.heli.pic.with.snow ContrastKashmir is a region located in northwest India, with Pakistan to its west and China to its east.  It is home to the Pir Panjal mountains in the Lesser Himalayan range. With the opportunity to heli ski the world's highest ski-able terrain, Kashmir Heliski has been operating from the Gulmarg Ski Resort in India since 2011.  With permission from the Jammu and Kashmiri governments, Kahsmir Heliski has exclusive rights to the entire Pir Panjal mountain range and its 22,000 square kilometers of terrain.

Kashmir Heliski is most proud of its spotless safety record.  It flies the 2012 model of the AS350 B3 Eurocopter using Swiss pilots who work during the summers providing Search & Rescue on Mt. Everest.  Since 2011, they have had zero accidental or incidental reports.

Is traveling to Gulmarg safe?  You will need to check with your government for their travel recommendations.  Many have felt very safe while traveling to Gulmarg, and the local Kashmiris and the Indian military go to great lengths to ensure the safety of international skiers.  The de-militarized "Line of Control" is about 20km from Gulmarg and has been peaceful since 1990.

Altitude Sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness is a concern as Gulmarg is at 2700 meters high, and some of the heli drop off summits can be as high as 5,000 meters if the weather is good.

From the sights, sounds and smells of the region, the culture in Kashmir is a very special place with many religions and many languages existing together.  Kashmir Heliski founder Billa Majeed Bakshi was born in the Gulmarg area and grew up skiing the local Himalaya mountains.  As a guide, he and his team know the mountains around Gulmarg intrincitly.

Facts & FAQ

Tenure and Terrain at Kashmir Heliski

With base camp at at 2600 meters in Gulmarg, you will ski 14,000 - 15,000 vertical meters each day with runs up to 1700 vertical meters long.

The Kashmir region combines the best of Himalayan high altitudes with 20,000 square kilometers of vast, untouched wilderness.  You can expect to ski long, wide open alpine bowls, perfectly spaced tree runs and undiscovered peaks up to 5000 meters high.  The mountains around Gulmarg, with Mt. Apharwat towering at 4200 meters, the high altitudes and a southern latitude of 35 degrees, are famous for a dry snow known as “curry” powder. Plan your trip from early January to mid March for the dry curry powder snow with below freezing temperatures at night and clear blue skies during the day.

Getting There

You will need a tourist visa from the Indian government before you travel.  Plan to fly into the Srinagar airport in the Kashmir region in Northwest India.  Srinagar is a one hour flight from Dehli or a 2 hour and 45 minute flight from Mumbai.  Srinager is a military airport operated by the Indian Army, so expect to see soldiers carrying weapons when you land.  But both the Indian military and the local Kashmiri security forces go to all lengths to be sure international skiers feel safe when visiting the area.

From Srinagar, it is a 50 km drive west to the ski town of Gulmarg.  In winter, it will take about an hour and half to drive there with a 4-wheel drive vehicle.  All transfers from the Srinagar airport are included with your heliski package from Kashmir Heliski.

Travel insurance is also advised.

Accommodations and Packages

Kashmir Heliski uses 3 hotels in the Gulmarg area.

The Rosewood is a newer, luxury hotel and resort built in 2016.  You can choose a deluxe room or suite, some with balconies with views of the Apharwat mountain range. The Rosewood Hotel also boasts a fine dining restaurant The Mist and a traditional Kashmir Tea Lounge called Filamento.

The Hilltop hotel is newly renovated 5-star luxury hotel and is described as modern, light and airy with impressive views.  It offers mountain view rooms and suites with Flat Screen TVs, mini bars and room service available.  The Hilltop has earned a Traveler's Choice award on Trip Advisor for cleaniless and hospitality as the best Gulmarg has to offer.  One potential downside is that the hotel currently does not serve alcohol.

The Hotel Highlands Park is a typical Kashmiri designed boutique hotel offering 26 single and double occupancy rooms spread over 7 chalet-style cottages.  The Highlands Park also has 9 suites accommodating 2-3 people.  Since 1962, Highlands Park has been the center of activity in the Gulmarg area and several Bollywood movies have used the location.  The bar and lounge at Highlands Park is famous for its traditional Indian style charm.  Beer and wine are available.

Heliski packages with Kashmir Heliski are all-inclusive and custom designed for your preferences from how many days you plan to ski and where you want to stay.

The Himalayan Week Package is the Ultimate Himalayan Experience and includes 6 nights lodging at either the newer hotel Rosewood, the traditional Highlands Park hotel or the luxury hotel Hilltop, with 6 days heliskiing in the Himalayas to include 9 runs per day.  Your 7th night will be on a houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinagar.  All breakfasts and dinners at the hotel are included, as well as freshly prepared lunches on the mountain during skiiing.

The Powder Week Package includes 6 nights lodging at your choice of either the Highlands Park hotel or the luxury Hilltop hotel in Gulmarg. You will have 6 days of heliskiing with 6 runs per day.  The 7th night will be on a houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinagar.  All meals are included.

The Pir Panjal Package includes 6 nights lodging at either the Highlands Park Hotel or the luxury Hilltop hotel.  You will ski for 6 days with 6 runs per day. Your 7th night will be on a houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinagar.  All meals are included.

No Fly Days

On days when heliskiing into the higher altitude peaks is not an option because of weather, plan to ski anyway!  Gulmarg is a ski resort area so you can ski down to Baba Reshi, Rangmarg and Drungg which are ski villages at 2000 meters high.  With the use of a 4-wheel drive vehicle, it is similar to Cat Skiing.
