Viking Heli Skiing
Looking for a heliskiing adventure?
Well, there may not be a better one than Viking Heli skiing on the Troll Peninsula in Northern Iceland.
As the name implies, the Troll Peninsula is home to massive ski terrain with wild lines that drop 5,000 vertical feet.
Fortunately, it’s also home to Viking Heliskiing Iceland and their 256 landing areas spread all over the peninsula. That kind of access means miles of untouched snow and terrain with everything from steep expert lines to powdery slopes that will hook beginner or intermediate skiers for life. On top of that, being this far north means you get to enjoy the Northern Lights after a full day of heli-skiing in the winter, or if you fall in love with skiing here you can ride into the night under the midnight sun in spring.
No matter how much you end up loving heli-skiing in Iceland though, you won’t love it more than the Viking guides since the founders are two childhood friends who took their love of skiing in Iceland and turned it into alpine skiing careers that took them all the way to the Olympics.
However, the Viking guides provide more than just experience. After flying into Keflavík International Airport and transferring to Reykjavík’s domestic airport, you’ll need to book a short flight, bus ride, or rental car to Akureyri International Airport. Once there the Viking staff will meet you and transfer you an hour north to the Viking Heliskiing Lodge in the scenic town of Siglufjörður.
From there, you’ll be checked into the Sigló Hotel which sits just on the edge of one of Iceland’s famous fjords. You can also book a private stay at the cozy Krossar Lodge which includes a private chef and guide.
Once in Siglufjörður, you’ll take off with Viking Heli Skiing. Their classic package offers a set number of vertical feet in packages that come with: 4 to 6 days of skiing for groups of four, one guide, a AS-350B2 or AS-350B3 helicopter that seats six people, meals during your stay, and accommodations at the Sigló Hotel. Viking's private packages offer the same but instead have unlimited vertical feet, or you can book a custom heli-skiing trip that perfectly fits your needs.
Your adventure won’t end there though. The Viking Heliskiing Lodge is the perfect place to après ski with great drinks, food, and everything else you need to relive the day. Afterwards, you can enjoy a sauna or hot tub in the hotel or re-energize yourself with a dive into the ice-cold ocean before dinner out in Siglufjörður.
If conditions don’t allow for heli-skiing, you can still get on the snow through snow-cat skiing, or Viking Heli Ski Iceland’s guides will set you up for horseback riding, whale watching, a spa day, or a local brewery tour. When we went heli skiing in Iceland, our down day in Iceland was very entertaining!
Just like all great skiing or snowboarding days, regardless of what turns you make along the way once you get to the end of your run with Viking Heli Skiing, you’ll be ready for another.
