Heli Skiing Greece: Where Thrill and History Collide
Heli skiing often means travelling to remote and frigid regions to find untouched snow and steep mountains. But when you’re heliskiing Greece, you’ll get world-class snow while being only hours away from warm and sunny Mediterranean beaches.
You may know Greece for its beaches and ancient history, but most people don’t realize that the Mt. Olympus that inspired the Greeks to call it the home of their gods is also an incredible heli skiing destination. In fact, if you’re a fan of Warren Miller films then you may recognize Mt. Olympus from this INSANE segment in “No Turning Back.”
The Mountains
Mt. Olympus
If you’re heliskiing Greece then Mt. Olympus has to be on your itinerary. Mt. Olympus’ elevation of 2,917 meters alone is reason to ski and snowboard there. Plus, Mt. Olympus rises straight from the sea with snow falling all the way from the summit to shoreline in maritime snowstorms that drop precipitation by the meter. All that snow means that there’s plenty of vertical for you to explore. If that’s not enough, there are 52 separate summits in the Olympus massif which creates a huge variety of terrain for heli-skiers.
Mt. Pindus
Mt. Olympus isn’t the only place for heliskiing Greece though. The Pindus mountains run throughout northern Greece with soaring peaks that soak up precipitation coming off the Ionian Sea. The Pindus range is spectacular enough to contain two national parks with Samaria Gorge and Vikos Gorge where you’ll find plenty of adventures and wildlife when you’re not skiing or snowboarding. You won’t have much time to do anything other than ski or snowboard in the Pindus range though since there is a massive amount of skiable terrain to explore and plenty of snow covering it.
Of course, when you’re not heliskiing Greece, you’ll enjoy one of the oldest and most influential cultures in the world through cities like Athens.
Skiing Greece: The Facts & FAQ
Most heliski trips to Greece will begin with a flight into Thessaloniki airport where you’ll then either travel south to Mt. Olympus or north to the Pindus range. Another advantage of heliskiing somewhere that sees as many tourists as Greece does is that there is plenty of infrastructure for travelers. For example, there are many towns and villages in the shadow of the mountains where you can get an authentic taste of modern Greek culture as well as incredible hotels to relax in whenever you’re away from the snow.
There’s also enough infrastructure to access every corner of Greece. For heliskiers, that means there are plenty of helicopters like the AS 350 B2 that can access the highest peaks in Greece. You’ll also have easy access to popular destinations like Athens and Mykonos thanks to highways, trains, and planes that make travelling through Greece easy.
