Silverton Mountain Heli Skiing

Heliskiing often gets a reputation for being prohibitively expensive. With a large amount of week-long, all-inclusive excursions up in British Columbia and Alaska, high cost is certainly commonplace. However, this all changes with Silverton Mountain Heli Skiing in Colorado.

Located at Silverton Mountain Resort, this operator is the only heliskiing operator in the United States to offer both full-day and single-run heliskiing package options. For one low price, you can get a small sample of what it feels like to ski the extreme terrain that so many backcountry films were made from.

Aaron Brill, very well known in the industry has also expanded the brand's operations to multiple locations in Alaska, under the name Silverton Mountain Guides.

Here are some details on what to expect from this operator in Colorado:

Facts & FAQ

Getting To Silverton Mountain Heli Skiing
Silverton Mountain has much of the same terrain that more northern heliskiing operators offer, but with significantly easier travel. The two closest airports to Silverton Mountain are Durango and Montrose. Each of these is about an hour-long scenic drive to get to the main resort. Optionally, you can fly directly into Denver, but the drive from the city is over 6 hours in good weather. If flying into Durango, you can take the Silverton Train Passenger Shuttle, which offers a fast and affordable way to get to the resort without a car.
Accommodations and Amenities

Since Silverton Mountain Heliskiing only offers single-day excursions, it’s the skier’s responsibility to source accommodations. Luckily, there’s a variety of options available in downtown Silverton. The top three options are:

  • Villa Dallavalle Historic Inn: A cozier and toned-down lodging option, the 7-room inn is the perfect place to unwind and relax without pretension.
  • The Wyman Hotel: The Wyman Hotel is a 15-room boutique hotel that features upscale amenities and bar credits for every day you ski or ride at Silverton Mountain.
  • The Avon: This hostel-style accommodation is perfect for outdoorsy travelers looking for a social and affordable place to stay in Silverton.
Terrain and Difficulty Levels

Silverton Mountain offers heliskiing in the gorgeous and rugged San Juan Mountains that surround the town. Silverton has a tenure of 29,000 acres. While small in comparison to other operators, the terrain can be demanding and fulfilling for expert skiers and intermediates alike.

You can also book a charter helicopter ride to Aspen or Telluride to experience the backcountry skiing that they have available there.

Packages Offered by Silverton Mountain Heli Skiing

Silverton Mountain Heliskiing offers some of the most affordable heliskiing packages in the world. Their short, one-day packages or single runs give guests the perfect introduction to heliskiing. If you end up becoming obsessed with the experience, Silverton also offers heliskiing up in Alaska for a truly legendary adventure.

You’ll have three package options to choose from. These include:

  • Single Run Heliskiing: For just $184/run, you can purchase a once-in-a-lifetime experience to complement your resort riding.
  • 6-Run Day Heliskiing: If you’d prefer a whole day out in the mountains, 6 runs are available for a discounted price.
  • Private Heli: Need a day of heliskiing all to yourself and your friends? Private experiences are available.

It’s worth noting that because of the nature of their single-day packages, backups like cat skiing are not available. In the case of a down day, your heliskiing will be rescheduled or refunded.

Consult the operator directly for current pricing and packages.
