Portillo Heli Skiing
Portillo is a resort located in the Valparaiso region of Chile and is the very first ski resort to be developed in South America. The resort is unique in that it features big terrain, but small crowds. Only 450 guests are allowed on the slopes each day, creating an experience that’s unlike any other.
Portillo Heli Skiing is an offshoot of the resort, giving access to the terrain in the surrounding Andes. Reservations are limited and only given on a case-by-case basis, depending on demand. It’s easily one of the most exclusive and elusive heli skiing experiences out there.
Facts & FAQ about Portillo Heli Ski
Portillo is located only 2 hours northeast of Chile’s capital, Santiago. This makes it quite accessible for guests flying from anywhere in the world. Once you fly into Santiago’s international airport, you can book a group or private transfer from the airport. Cars are completely unnecessary at Portillo, as the village and small ski town are incredibly walkable. The resort’s sister company, Portillo Tours and Travel can facilitate this quick and affordable transfer.
Portillo is unique in that their accommodations at the resort are all-inclusive. Once you arrive, you won’t have to worry about a thing. This all-inclusive service includes ski-in, and ski-out lodging, four meals a day, lift tickets to the resort, and access to all the available amenities. You’ll have four options available to you when you come to heli ski. These include:
- Ski Chalets: Chalets offer privacy for groups of up to eight people. They’re perfect for families and friends and offer unparalleled lake views. Amenities are provided at the main hotel.
- Hotel Portillo: The classic lodging option available, the hotel has 123 rooms in suite, apartment, single bed, and double bed varieties. All meals and amenities are found on the premises.
- Inca Lodge: Found off the main hotel, the Inca Lodge is the most affordable option and features hostel-style accommodations.
- Octagon Lodge: Also affordable, the Octagon lodge features private rooms and two-bunk bed rooms for up to four guests.
Portillo heli skiing takes place in the valleys and peaks surrounding the resort. This terrain is very similar to what’s found in Alaska, and many of the guides have experience from across the globe. A main feature of their massive terrain is Aconcagua Peak, which towers the resort at nearly 23,000 feet. While you won’t be skiing this exact peak, much of the surrounding terrain is comparable.
Heli skiing here is very subject to weather conditions. While Portillo gets some of the most snow in the Andes, the quality can be very hit or miss. As such, heli skiing on any given day is never a guarantee. Alternative activities like cat skiing are not available if the helicopter can’t fly due to the weather. In addition, you should be a strong skier to make the most out of your time.
