Whistler Blackcomb Heli-Skiing

Whistler Blackcomb Heli-skiingMost heliskiing operators are third-party companies that facilitate heliskiing in a permitted backcountry tenure. However, Whistler-Blackcomb is one of the few resorts to offer their own heliskiing tours. This legendary resort, available on the Epic Pass, is a jewel itself, but the cherry on top is its diverse daily heliskiing tours.

If you want a quick way to elevate your Whistler ski trip, Whistler-Blackcomb Heli-Skiing can make it happen.

Facts & FAQ

Getting to Whistler-Blackcomb

Getting to the greater Whistler area is easy. Located just 2 hours North of Vancouver, you’ll first fly into YVR – Vancouver International Airport. You can find many direct flights from airlines all across North America, making your journey quite quick.

Once in Vancouver, transportation to Whistler-Blackcomb is just as simple. Renting a car is always an option but the easiest and most affordable way is by boarding a shuttle. The YVR Skylynx is one of the cheapest options at only $40 round trip.

Accommodations and Amenities

A main highlight of heliskiing directly with Whistler-Blackcomb is that you’ll have an abundance of lodging options available. The Whistler village is extremely walkable, with countless restaurants, bars, and shops spread throughout. Most visitors choose to stay in higher-end hotels, such as:

  • Fairmont Chateau Whistler
  • Delta Whistler Village Suites
  • Nita Lake Lodge
  • Tantalaus Resort Lodge

All these accommodations feature sumptuous amenities like indoor pools, full-service spas, and room service for your absolute comfort.

Terrain and Difficulty Levels

You’ll have over 430,000 acres available to you when you come to heliski Whistler. This area is over 50 times larger than the Whistler-Blackcomb resort. While the resort is huge, more experienced skiers may find themselves becoming bored with the terrain over time. When this occurs, the backcountry terrain accessed by helicopter will surely suffice.

Whistler-Blackcomb Heliskiing only averages 50 skiers a day, meaning there will always be fresh snowfall for you to experience. There are over 475 named runs and many are still undiscovered. Whistler’s heliskiing guides operate in 11 different terrain zones and always select the best one for the day based on conditions.

You don’t need to be an extreme, expert skier to enjoy heliskiing here, but peak physical fitness and skiing prowess are a must. Most package options are catered to advanced and expert skiers. If you’re with a private group, your guide may be able to tone down the skiing to match more entry-level powder skiers.

Package Options

Whistler-Blackcomb Heliskiing flies in a variety of helicopters including Bell 212s, Bell 407s, and A-Star B3s. They do not have cat skiing as a backup option, but there are other operators in the area that can facilitate this. Your package choices include:

  • 4 Run Bell 212: Designed for advanced skiers, this package includes four runs with up to 9 other skiers. 6,000-10,000 vertical feet can be expected.
  • 6 Run Bell 407: Made for experts, this fast-paced package has smaller groups of up to 5 skiers and faster runs. You can expect 9,000-15,000 vertical feet.
  • 6 Run Bell Semi-Private: Features the same vertical details as the standard 6 run package, but with your own exclusive group.
  • Private Heli Packages: Includes 1.3 hours of flight time and allows you and your group to choose the pace and terrain.

To summarize, Whistler-Blackcomb Heliskiing is the perfect operation for the visiting skier that doesn’t want to venture too far away from the resort. With a huge terrain selection and plenty of package options, you can easily enjoy the B.C. backcountry one day, and tear up the resort the next.
