Northern Escape Heli-Skiing’s Mountain Lodge package takes the operation’s already impressive Northern British Columbia heli-skiing program and gives it the premium treatment. This is their higher-end option: a remote fly-in lodge, only 10 guests, two groups sharing a helicopter, unlimited vertical, snowcat backup and the kind of amenities that feel particularly good after a full day of skiing Skeena Mountain powder. But the part that catches our attention isn’t necessarily the new lodge or the gourmet meals. It’s the helicopter-to-skier ratio.

A lot of heli-ski operators advertise “small-group heli-skiing,” but group size only tells half the story. You also need to know how many groups are rotating through the helicopter.

At Mountain Lodge, Northern Escape runs two groups of five guests sharing one helicopter. That matters.

Fewer groups generally means less time waiting for the helicopter to work through the rotation and more opportunity to keep the day moving. For heli-skiers who have already experienced larger group rotations, the appeal of a two-group program should be pretty obvious.

It falls somewhere between a traditional shared helicopter program and going fully private—essentially giving guests a more exclusive, semi-private style of heli-skiing without requiring a private helicopter..

Traveling to Northern Escape Heliskiing Mountain Lodge

Northern Escape is based near Terrace, British Columbia, with its Mountain Lodge tucked away on a remote alpine lakeshore deep in the Skeena Mountains of Northern BC.

Northern Escape prides itself on its easy accessibility. Although the Mountain Lodge is a fly-in location, the operator handles most of the difficult logistics. The only leg of the trip you’re responsible for is getting to Northwest Terrace Regional Airport. This airport has multiple daily direct flights from Vancouver Airport, so anyone coming from Western North America should have no problem arriving promptly. In fact, most skiers can depart in the morning or early afternoon and arrive at the Northern Escape Heliskiing Mountain Lodge before sundown.

Once you arrive in Terrace, Northern Escape handles the rest. They charter a private helicopter flight to their remote location. This scenic 15-minute flight brings you through the Skeena Mountains, allowing you to scope out some of the terrain you might end up enjoying.

Despite the remote setting, getting there is relatively straightforward. Guests travel to Terrace and then transfer by helicopter to Mountain Lodge. Helicopter transfers directly to and from Terrace Airport are included in the package.

Once the helicopter lifts off, you're leaving town behind and heading into the mountains for a true fly-in/fly-out heli-ski lodge experience.

It's a nice combination: relatively convenient access to Terrace followed by the feeling of being properly removed from civilization once you reach the lodge

Accommodations and Amenities

Terrain and Difficulty Levels

Northern Escape is located quite far up north in the Skeena Mountains, meaning their 55,000 square kilometer tenure gets blessed with light, dry snowfall. They have nearly everything you can think of when it comes to terrain. From high-elevation alpine peaks to beautifully spaced glades down below, it’d be difficult for any ability-level skier to get bored here.

Many of their higher peaks surpass 7,000 feet, and their tree runs are below 2,500. With some of their longest runs containing over 6,000 feet of vertical, you’re bound to get more heliskiing than you would with some other operators. To ski runs this long, you’ll want to be in great physical shape and be a comfortable, strong-intermediate or advanced skier.

This is where Northern Escape really gets our attention.

Northern Escape operates in the Skeena and Kitimat Mountain Ranges of Northern British Columbia, roughly midway between Central BC and Alaska. That combination of northern latitude and proximity to Pacific storms brings plenty of deep BC powder, while still providing something you don't always get farther north: excellent tree skiing when the alpine shuts down.

And the terrain is BIG.

Northern Escape has one of the world's largest licensed heli-skiing tenures, covering approximately 3,373 square kilometres (833,571 acres). For perspective, that's more than 30 times the size of Les 3 Vallées in France and roughly 100 times the skiable area of Whistler Blackcomb.

Within that tenure are more than 300 established runs spread across nine heli-skiing zones, and Northern Escape says the terrain is vast enough that first descents—and the opportunity to name them—still happen.

The variety is equally impressive. Depending on conditions, you could be skiing massive glaciers, wide-open alpine bowls, steep couloirs, long mountain faces, old-growth forests, pillow lines and steep tree skiing. Some descents exceed 2,000 vertical metres, running from high alpine peaks all the way into cedar forests in the valley bottoms.

The nine zones provide plenty of options as weather and snow conditions change. Fjordland is known for big glaciers, Wild West for large alpine lines, South Shore for tree skiing, while Promised Land brings steep trees and big pillows. North Shore includes Northern Escape's biggest descent at more than 6,000 vertical feet.

That's exactly the kind of terrain diversity we like to see in a BC heli-skiing operation. Bluebird day? Head for the glaciers and big alpine. Storm rolling through? Drop into the trees. And if visibility gets bad enough to ground the helicopter, Mountain Lodge guests have direct access to Northern Escape's 23.35-square-kilometre Catland snowcat backup area.

The most telling comparison might be this: Northern Escape's backup cat-skiing area is roughly comparable in size to Whistler Blackcomb.

And that's just the backup terrain.

For heli-skiers looking for the classic Northern BC combination of deep powder, huge vertical, glaciers, alpine terrain, steep trees and pillows, Northern Escape certainly has the real estate.

With more than 800,000 acres to explore, running out of terrain probably isn't going to be the problem.
