Northern Escape Heli Skiing

Northern Escape Heli Skiing

Northern Escape Heli Skiing is a lesser-known operator in British Columbia, and they prefer to keep it that way. Yet in 2022, Northern Escape was voted the World’s Best Heli Ski Operator by the World Ski Awards, so it’s safe to say they ARE on the world heliskiing radar. This operator focuses on flying in small groups and is dedicated to supplying as much skiing time as humanely possible. They don’t believe in down days, so you’ll never have to waste time drinking in the lodge when the weather’s less than ideal.

If the quality of skiing isn’t enough to satisfy you, you won’t be disappointed by their accommodations either. With a focus on exceptional dining, you’ll be living large and enjoying some of the finest cuisines that Northern British Columbia has to offer. With three distinct locations to choose from, you’ll also have a primo selection over the landscape you wish to ski, and the comforts you wish to relish in. Here’s a closer look at this up-and-coming, larger heliskiing operator

Northern Escape Heli Skiing Destinatons

When it comes to modernity, Northern Escape takes the cake in the heliskiing industry. Many operators function out of older, dilapidated lodges that resemble summer camp more than a refined, backcountry experience. Northern Escape does it right and focuses on providing lush service and accommodations at three unique lodges. Each has a boutique feel to it, so you’ll never get the vibe that you’re staying at some built-up corporate retreat. All locations are perfect for unwinding after an exhausting and fulfilling day up in the mountains.

Their three lodge locations are:

  • Yellow Cedar Lodge Although the oldest offering, this doesn’t mean the Yellow Cedar Lodge is outdated. In 2020, this location was drastically renovated and now boasts a modern appeal, as well as an upgrade boot room. This spot is the classic lodging option for skiers coming to the area and is only a 20-minute shuttle ride away from Terrace Airport.
  • Mountain Lodge Opened in 2020, the Mountain Lodge is a chic, off-grid location that must be flown into. It has 10 rooms, all single occupancy, along with en suite bathrooms for complete privacy and comfort.
  • Skeena Spey Riverside Wilderness Lodge The newest addition to the Northern Escape heliskiing family of lodges, this 6500 sq ft gorgeous property is designed for a private small group of only 4-5 skiers, making it a great option for private skiing groups.

Facts & FAQ

History of Northern Escape Heli Skiing

Northern Escape Heli Skiing was founded in 2004 by four lifelong friends who had a dedication to the mountains and impeccable skiing. They have continuously focused on a smaller-scale heliskiing experience so that their clients can be well cared for. This normally entails groups of no more than five or six skiers. In addition, the operator exclusively flies Koala helicopters, the smallest machine in the business. This allows them to fly faster and more nimbly, reaching more precarious terrain that other industry helicopters couldn’t achieve. Many operators shuttle skiers in bus-size helicopters, making it feel like a commercialized experience. However, most Northern Escape heliskiing reviews reference the complete opposite.

Northern Escape’s terrain has been used by many major ski film companies, including Matchbox Productions. Their operation has also appeared in Skier, Transworld Snowboarding, and Powder. Today, the experience is much the same as it was when the four founders set out nearly 20 years ago. They hire an amazing team of ACMG-certified guides, world-class Red Seal Chefs, and an attentive service staff that’s there for your every need.

Vertical Guarantees and Backup Skiing

Many operators in British Columbia offer unlimited vertical with their packages, and Northern Escape Heli Skiing is no exception. While they may share this factor in common, their vertical guarantees are significantly higher. Most operators claim that an average week of heliskiing will return around 100,000 vertical feet. At Northern Escape, many visiting skiers can enjoy 145,000 feet or more.

Northern Escape offers unlimited vertical as a package add-on, although their rates are quite reasonable and decrease with the number of days you book. Additionally, you’ll never be penalized for skiing more than the guaranteed vertical with an unlimited package. If you don’t hit it, refunds can always be expected. Vertical guarantees depend on the number of days you’ll be skiing, but generally fall into these categories;

  • 3 Days: 52,000 feet (15,850 m)
  • 4 Days: 69,000 feet (21,000 m)
  • 5 Days: 86,000 feet (26,200 m)
  • 7 Days: 120,000 feet (36,500 m)

If one thing in Northern Escape Heliskiing reviews stands out the most, it’s their cat skiing backup. Very few operators offer this as an alternative, but Northern Escape has a whole region of terrain dedicated to it. If the weather is too severe to fly, a heated cat will bring you into gladed terrain. Vertical guarantees still apply even if you experienced no-fly days in your package.

Heliskiing Terrain (Zones) and Difficulty

Northern Escape operates in 12 distinct zones in the Skeena Mountains, encompassing an area that is 5,500 square kilometers in size. There are over 250 named runs, but guides are always spotting new lines, and naming rights are given to those who conquer them first. The northern latitude of this operator means that snow is light and dry and falls in copious amounts. Terrain ranges from high altitude glaciers in the Fjordland Zone, to low-elevation trees in the My Town Region. If you’re seeking long descents and challenging, rugged terrain, the First Nations Ski Area will be your favorite spot.

Book a Trip With Northern Escape Heli Skiing Today!

Booking a trip with Northern Escape Heli Skiing is a great option for the traveler that’s seeking an off-the-beaten path experience. While they’re easily accessible from a logistical perspective, this operator isn’t as popular as some of the bigger names, making it a relatively unknown treasure.

However, this is changing fast. Although a smaller operation, the services they provide are truly top-notch. From unlimited vertical with cat skiing as backup, to exquisite cuisine and lodging accommodations, you’ll get your fill on and off the slopes.

View each individual location’s page for a complete list of package availability, amenity offerings, and how to get there.

If their three locations don't seem to fit your idea of a perfect heliskiing trip, then browse all of the British Columbia Heli Skiing Operators in our Directory. You're certain to find what you're looking for in BC!
