Mike Wiegele Heliskiing
Very few operators embody the welcoming vibe and family-oriented business essence of Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing. This company was produced in the vision of the man himself, free from corporate greed and expansion. Wiegele’s goal was to provide an experience that treated everyone – guests, staff, and guides – with mutual respect, and to instill skiing confidence in guests looking to have the best day of their life.
Today, Wiegele has four distinct properties that each give skiers a different experience. With a variety of package options tailored to you and your group’s needs, you’re bound to find a property that aligns with your skiing goals.
Mike Wiegele Heliskiing Resort Destinations
Regardless of which property location you choose, you can expect some of the most luxurious amenities and accommodations in the heliskiing industry. Whereas many operators lodge their guests in outdated chalets and log cabins they call “rustic”, Mike Wiegele Heliskiing focuses on providing the comforts and feel of a high-end resort.
Although these refinements are commonplace at each destination, the terrain can vary widely, and each property is designed with a different type of package in mind. Your options include:
- Blue River Resort This location is their flagship “heli village." Guest chalets surround the central helipad area, where common areas are also found. It's ideal for intermediate to advanced skiers.
- Albreda Lodge This boutique, 17 single-room lodge sits 45 km North of Blue River Resort. It serves as the main base for skiers seeking more challenging and remote terrain in the Cariboo and Monashee Mountains. It's ideal for those wanting a faster-paced and tailored experience.
- Bavarian Estate & Cabana As an add-on at the Blue River Resort, the Bavarian Estate and Cabana can be booked together or separately. The Bavarian Estate features private service (including a chef and waitress) and the cabana is a self-contained 3-bedroom chalet.
- Eleanor Lake Estate Originally designed for Mike Wiegele’s family, the Eleanor Lake Estate serves as an add-on private accommodation for small groups with close access to Blue River Resort’s amenities.
Facts & FAQ
Mike Wiegele emigrated from Austria to Canada in the late 1950s and soon found a skiing career calling for him. Traveling around North America and Eastern Canada, he worked near Lake Tahoe at Sugar Bowl Resort and eventually settled in the Banff/Lake Louis area. In the late 1960s, he and Bonnie Wiegele spent time developing the local ski school while also touring the surrounding mountains. Countless days were spent traversing those slopes, and Mike began to envision an easier method of experiencing it.
In 1974, the Blue River Resort was established, followed up by additional accommodations in the 90s, and the most recent accommodations in the early 2000s. Since then, Mike Wiegele Heliskiing has consistently elevated their experience for guests and family alike.
