Last Frontier Heliskiing Ripley Creek
Last Frontier Heliskiing Ripley Creek offers quite a different experience when compared to its sister destination. Unlike the classic, remote village accommodations offered at Bell 2, Ripley Creek is less isolated, but perhaps ten times more intimate.
The very small, once exclusive mining and logging town of Stewart, British Columbia functions as the home base for this Last Frontier Heliskiing destination. It provides visiting skiers with a very rustic stay in a town of less than 300 full-time residents...but you'll bump into about three of them!
The town is now known for mining, hunting and fishing, but in the winter, it's a sleepy little community that fills up with a new crew of twenty four powder-hungry heli-skiers each week!
While you won’t get the grandeur experience of staying at an "exclusive heliskiing lodge" (like Bell 2), you’ll still love the remote aspects of the location and enjoy very comfortable accommodations at the local hotel, known as the Ripley Creek Inn. You'll of course have access to all the uniqueness found in Stewart.
The icing on the cake of course, is the extreme, expert terrain that’s available in their humongous tenure - take a look! (BIG file - takes a while to load!)
...and of course the DEEP POW that the Coastal Mountains are known for.
Courtesy of Last Frontier Heliskiing, this EPIC video paints a portrait of a perfect powder paradise...this is your invitation...and it's habit forming...
Last Frontier - Stewart B.C. & Ripley Creek Inn Facts & FAQ
Located in the far Northwest region of British Columbia along the border of Alaska, Last Frontier Ripley Creek in Stewart B.C. requires a bit of a trek to reach. Fortunately, however, the base and accommodations are accessible by well maintained major roadways, making the trip north an adventure of anticipation!
Stewart B.C. is about a mile away from Hyder Alaska, and the connecting road is a somewhat common travel route between B.C. and Alaska, especially for summer travelers. This little slice of the globe is its own curious ecosystem. You have to visit to really grasp it!
While you're there, you'll likely get "Hyderized" in Alaska! You can walk that mile from the Ripley Creek Inn to Hyder, AK...and stagger back! Don't forget your passport. You'll need it for your boarder crossing at perhaps the most casual U.S. boarder stop I've ever witnessed!
To reach Stewart B.C., you’ll follow an easy three-step process:
Fly into Vancouver International Airport. Many major airports across North America offer direct flights.
Catch a connecting flight to the Northwest Terrace Regional Airport.
Take a 4-5 hour shuttle ride North to Stewart, B.C., provided by Last Frontier Heliskiing Ripley Creek.
Ripley Creek is ideal for the visiting skier that doesn’t desire an isolated lodging experience. As mentioned, you’ll be staying in the town of Stewart, an old historic mining town. Local accommodations are made at a “funky and rustic” hotel – the Ripley Creek Inn, capable of lodging up to 24 guests. Across the main street from the Inn is Last Frontier’s communal area and the Bitter Creek Café, where you’ll be sharing all of your meals and enjoying après ski drinks.
The primary accommodations for the Inn / Hotel is a solid walk down a path from the main street. Encompassing several buildings, it's a much larger property than it looks! It is rustic, spacious, charming, old & "creaky!" I had to move from the bottom floor to upstairs because the floor boards above me were pretty loud, as the guests upstairs were moving about through the night. And then there was the squirrel in the ceiling! It made a laughable, fun story, and the staff was totally cool and accommodative, moving me upstairs to this spacious room featured below. I'm definitely going back!
While staying here, you can enjoy:
- Stretching classes
- Massages
- Sauna
- Outdoor Spa
- Exercise room
- Cell phone connectivity and limited internet.
Last Frontier Heliskiing - Ripley Creek doesn’t provide cat skiing as a backup activity, but there are a variety of things to do in case you can’t fly one day. These include skeet shooting and museum touring. You don't go for the museum tour! But if you have a down day, it's pretty cool.
The miners from the early days were a different breed. It's a cool tour!
A no-fly or "down day" can be agonizing...you don't want to spend tooooo much time in the bar...but if that's the way if plays out, it's well stocked, a lively, intimate environment, and you'll get to know your fellow heli-skiers pretty well!
A highlight of Last Frontier Ripley Creek Heliskiing is that it’s catered to advanced and expert skiers. This location is perfect for the individual that doesn’t want to be slowed down by more novice skiers. The skiing takes place in the Coast Mountains near the Alaskan Panhandle, an area that’s hallmarked by steep craggy cliffs and mountains. This extreme terrain caters to those with a little more adventure and need for adrenaline!
In the late season you’ll be able to enjoy long, enormous glacial runs and in the early season you’ll be able to ski through dense old-growth forests. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean results in astonishing snowfall amounts and waist-deep powder skiing for most every turn - maybe DEEPER! Just look at that photo!
When I visited in mid-January '23, unfortunately, the warm weather, continuous snowfall and fog resulted in multiple down days. That was just bad luck. According to Steve Rosset of Last Frontier, down days average 1.6 / week in January, due to more frequent storms. And in February & March, down days average half that. Statistically speaking, you should be able to ski out your vertical guarantee, given that amount of down time.
The skiing that we did get was waist-deep with lots of pillows through the trees - I LOVE tree skiing, so it was super fun!
Last Frontier Ripley Creek features the same standard package options as Bell 2. With a priority on small-group heliskiing, you’ll be sharing an A-Star helicopter with three other skiers and taking turns flying with two other groups. Avalanche gear, ACMG-certified guides, and all meals and lodging are included in the package, as well as transportation to and from Terrace.
Trip and package lengths include:
- 4 Days
- 5 Days
- 7 Days
- 7 Day Safari Package (both Ripley Creek and Bell 2)
