Heli Skiing Albania
Which European mountain range gets the most precipitation?
It’s not in France, Switzerland, or Italy, but the Dinaric Alps in eastern Europe’s Albania, otherwise known as, “one of the last wild mountain ranges in Europe.”
Haven’t heard of the Dinaric Alps but want to ski and snowboard untouched snow far away from the traffic and lift lines of resorts? The guides at Heliski Albania have the expertise, helicopters, and access to help you do just that.
Heli Skiing in Northern Albania
If you want to heli ski Albania, then the place to go is the northern tip of the country where the Valbona Valley sits between Kosovo and Montenegro.
Once you arrive in the Valbona Valley, you’ll enjoy the rustic charm of the area along with stunning views of the mountains you’ll be skiing and snowboarding down. In fact, the Valbona Valley is so beautiful that Albania created a national park that’s worth visiting on your journey to or from the mountains or on a down day.
You may be unable to take your eyes off the snow-covered peaks though, because to heli ski Albania means skiing and snowboarding in conditions that are closer to Alaska than they are Chamonix. Albania’s proximity to the Adriatic Sea combines with high elevation and steep slopes for deep snowpacks and stable conditions that rival the best of Alaska and British Columbia.
On top of the excellent snow, if you want to heli ski Albania you won’t have much competition given the amount of terrain compared to how many people visit. It’s estimated that only 8 to 12 people are heli skiing Albania any given week during the season which runs from January to late March. Add on 1,500 square kilometers of alpine wilderness and no landing restrictions and you can see why Albania is a heli skiing paradise waiting for someone to make first descents.
Of course, before you can get on the snow you must get to Albania.
Getting to Albania
If you’re flying into Albania for your heliski trip, then the nearest airports to the Valbona Valley are Pristina in Kosovo, Skopje in Macedonia, or the capital of Albania, Tirana. Each airport will require a drive to reach the Valbona Valley with Pristina being the closest, but a flight into Tirana will give you a chance to experience Albania’s culture and capital before driving north.
The valley itself is steeped in just as much folklore as it is in vertical feet. In fact, the Dinaric Alps are also known as, “The Accursed Mountains” due to their size and wild nature. The culture of the area is far from cursed though.
Although you’ll find fewer luxury offerings in the Dinairc Alps than you would in other European ski destinations, there is an authentic culture that has persevered through isolation and now welcomes visitors to dive into all things Albania. That includes excellent food, people, and outdoor activities like hiking.
The guides we mentioned earlier are a great resource to find authentically Albanian experiences in between your time heli skiing Albania. Just make sure you get there before the rest of the world realizes how great heli skiing Albania is!
