Alaska Rendezvous Heli Guides
Alaska Rendezvous Heli Guides is a tight-knit, family-owned and operated heli skiing company that first set its roots in Valdez in the early 2000s. Theo Meiner is the founding member and was himself a respected guide in Doug Coombs’ operation in the 1990s.
The company’s Rendezvous Lodge is in a remote setting completely inaccessible to the rest of the world. From there, you’ll have access to one of the finest skiing areas in the Chugach Mountains, notorious for its bounty of clear days experienced between storm systems. If you value a rustic, homey vibe on your heli skiing adventures, Alaska Rendezvous Heli Ski Guides is the operator for you.
Facts & FAQ
Like many heli skiing locations across Alaska, complicated travel is almost a guarantee. Valdez is located about four and a half hours from Anchorage, AK, where the nearest international airport is located. Most guests will first fly here, as Anchorage is served by most major airlines across the lower 48.
Once in Anchorage, guests can either catch a connecting flight to Valdez, although this trip is often interrupted due to bad weather. Renting a car is highly recommended, as the scenic drive to Valdez is gorgeous. Specific driving instructions can be accessed from Alaska Rendezvous directly.
The Rendezvous Lodge is located deep in the heart of the Chugach. It’s so far out there, that the only time you’ll leave the lodge is to score some pow or head home from your journey. Alaska Rendezvous Heli Guides create a private space with their 8-room, double-occupancy lodge, and there are a variety of amenities included:
- Full Private Baths
- Boot and Glove Dryers
- Sauna
- On-Site Laundry
- Spa Services
Also found at the lodge is a full-service restaurant and tavern. Continental cuisine like Swiss entrees, Japanese sushi, and American steaks are served. The tavern has an extensive selection of liquor, beer, and wine as well.
For mobile travelers, there is also an RV Park available with full hookups including electricity, water, sewer, trash, and shower facilities.
The secret of Valdez powder has long since been discovered by the world, but Alaska Rendezvous Heli Guides has a small section of paradise. Their location in the Chugach Mountain range is right where storms tend to clear, allowing for a minimal amount of no-fly days. In fact, Alaska Rendezvous averages 85% flyable days, more than many other Alaska-based operators.
With 3,500 square miles of terrain spread across three distinct weather zones, the terrain possibilities are endless. The proximity to the Gulf means that enormous amounts of snowfall are deposited here. The historically snowiest location in Alaska, Thompson Pass, is located just South of the tenure where you’ll be skiing.
In the rare event of no-fly days, a variety of activities are offered, with gear provided by Alaska Rendezvous Heli Guides. These include:
- Cross-country skiing
- Dog sledding
- Ski touring
- Snowshoeing
If you’re looking to enjoy cat skiing, packages can be found with Black Ops Valdez.
When flying with Alaska Rendezvous, you’ll be flying aboard a traditional A-Star helicopter, provided by Coastal Helicopters.
