Alaska Snowboard Guides

Heli SkiingSkiers and snowboarders looking for flexibility and top-tier terrain will find that Alaska Snowboard Guides (ASG) is the premier heli skiing operator in Alaska. Enjoyed by amateurs and professional athletes alike, this company has the guiding skill, geographical knowledge, and amenities to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Here, you’ll find a team of guides that have decades of experience in the Alaskan wilderness and have been a part of numerous local operations. Whereas other heli skiing outfitters pigeonhole their guests into preset package options, ASG allows for complete customization.

Facts & FAQ

Traveling to Alaska Snowboard Guides

Located right in downtown Valdez, AK, accessing ASG isn’t as difficult as some other interior Alaskan operators. To start, you’ll first want to fly into Anchorage from any of these internationally connecting airports:

  • Seattle (SEA)
  • Las Vegas (LAS)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Denver (DEN)
  • Chicago (ORD)
  • Portland (PDX)
  • Phoenix (PHX)
  • Minneapolis (MSP)

Once in Anchorage, you can take a short 40-minute flight to Valdez through Ravn Alaska. It’s very important to book through Ravn directly, as companies like Expedia make it much more difficult to change flight plans. Weather is constantly changing in Alaska, and it’s likely your flight could be delayed.

Optionally, you can rent a motorhome or car and drive to the Valdez location. This mode of transportation will take you 5 hours. ASG recommends buying travel insurance when booking their packages for the peace of mind it will bring to your plans.

Accommodations Available

If booking one of the inclusive packages offered by ASG, you’ll be lodged at the Totem Inn in Valdez. This inn features 91 rooms, most single occupancy, with doubles available upon request. While staying at the inn, you’ll have access to an indoor pool, fitness center, and a complimentary buffet breakfast every morning.

ASG has also partnered with Magpies Bakery to offer week-long meal packages. These packages feature breakfast, lunch, and dinner for one set price, and are also offered daily. Magpies has the benefit of being located right at the helipad, so it’s incredibly convenient to pick up some grub before or after your skiing session.

Terrain and Difficulty Levels

ASG skies and rides in the Chugach Mountain range, almost entirely above treeline. This contributes to the feeling of seemingly endless runs. A diversity of features is scattered throughout the tenure, including half-mile-wide bowls, spines, couloirs, and natural halfpipes. Terrain can be incredibly steep, with some runs at 50-degree angles. Others are more gently, widely spaced, and meandering.

Your guides will assess the overall ability level of the group and bring you to locations best catered to the group’s ability level. The extensiveness of the terrain means that intermediate skiers and snowboarders are more than welcome here, in addition to the experts.

Package Options with Alaska Snowboard Guides

Alaska Snowboard Guides offers two main packages for skiers and riders to choose from. Both require a minimum stay of 7 days, but daily rates are occasionally available if you get in touch ahead of time. If you can stay for a week or longer, you’ll have the option of these packages:

  • The Classic: This package includes skiing or riding, with no accommodations. You’ll be guaranteed four hours of flight time, which averages out to around 24 runs over the course of one week. Many visitors choose to lodge in their motorhomes on the premises or take advantage of the flexibility and book wherever they desire.
  • The Inclusive: For skiers seeking a more crafted package, The Inclusive provides accommodation at the Totem Inn, transportation to the base camp and Valdez airport, and heli lunches up in the mountains.

While there is no vertical guarantee, the designated flight time of 4 hours ensures you get all the skiing and riding you can handle. You’ll be flying in a classic AS350 (A-Star), provided by Precision Helicopters. If you ever experience a down day, you can enjoy one of Alaska Snowboard Guides’ snowmobiling or touring packages, skeet shooting, ice-climbing or cat-skiing at nearby Black Ops Valdez.
