Phantom Heli Skiing
Situated in the surreal “sea-to-sky” area of British Columbia, Phantom Heli Skiing provides easy access to the legendary terrain surrounding Vancouver and Whistler. Extensive single-day package options facilitate a quick and comprehensive taste of the heli skiing life. Unlike other B.C. operators that involve arduous travel and isolating lodge experiences, Phantom is committed to providing close-to-home flights for those visiting the greater Squamish area.
Facts & FAQ
Phantom’s Heli-base is in Squamish, British Columbia, right between Vancouver and Whistler. This proximity to a major metropolitan area and a mecca for resort skiing makes it an ideal destination for skiers looking to dip their toes into the heliskiing world without committing to week-long excursions.
Your first stop is to inevitably fly into Vancouver International Airport. From there, Phantom will arrange a transfer to their helipad on the morning of your trip. If you prefer to rent a car, driving is incredibly easy. Simply take the scenic Sea-to-Sky highway 1.5 hours North.
Phantom Heli Skiing does not provide lodging accommodation as they are only a single-day package operator. However, the region is saturated with plenty of beautiful hotels and rustic lodges, all perfectly tailored to match your style. In general, you’ll have three options for where to stay:
- Whistler: Most people coming to heliski with Phantom will also enjoy skiing at Whistler-Blackcomb. If staying here some of the most popular choices include the various options at the resort, the Four Seasons Resort, and the Pangea Pod Hotel.
- Vancouver: Vancouver has no shortage of options. Nearly any type of accommodation can be found here, from luxury high-end hotels to affordable dormitory-style hostels.
- Squamish: Squamish may be a bit separated from Whistler and Vancouver, but it does give you quick, direct access to the helipad. The Howe Sound Inn & Brewing is by far the most popular choice.
The backcountry landscape surrounding Vancouver and Whistler is some of the most diverse in the world. With close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, you’ll experience copious amounts of snowfall that often surpass 40 ft. per season. The interior coastal environment gives rise to astonishing glaciers that mellow out into dense, old-growth forests. While skiing with Phantom, you’ll have access to extreme ability-level chutes, and mellower intermediate bowls and glades. Whether you’re a first-time heliskier or a vet, you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Phantom makes the heliskiing experience attainable for all types of travelers. From completely exclusive packages to more public ones, you’re sure to find an option that fits your budget. This operator collaborates with Black Tusk Helicopter Inc. and utilizes small, A-Star helicopters to fly four people at a time. While cat skiing is not available for bad weather days, resort skiing is always a backup option.
In general, you’ll have these choices available to you:
- Vertical Package: This is the standard heli skiing option, with helicopter use shared between 3 groups of 4 skiers. 3800 meters (12,467 feet) of vertical is guaranteed.
- Semi-Private: If you’d rather have quicker use of the helicopter, the semi-private package only involves 2 groups of 4 skiers. 1.5 hours of flight time is provided.
- Downtown Vancouver Private: If you prefer to fly directly out of Vancouver without making a trip North, private direct tours are available for you and 3 other skiers.
If you’re planning a trip to the Vancouver area or are looking to ski at Whistler-Blackcomb, Phantom Heli Skiing can be a fantastic side portion of your trip. With easy accessibility, comprehensive packages, and iconic terrain, there’s no better way to experience the B.C. backcountry.
