Chamonix Heliski - Italy
You won’t find anywhere in Europe, or even the world, where people love mountain sports as much as they do in Chamonix. Yet, heli skiing in Chamonix and all of France is not allowed. However, Franck Chapon and his associates at Chamonix Heli Ski or Chamonix Sports Adventure appear ready to accommodate a heli skiing adventure in the Alps...in regions of Italy or Switzerland where heli skiing is allowed.
Facts & FAQ
Several European countries have declined to allow heli skiing due to environmental concerns. France is one of them, which means you cannot touch down on the top of slopes for skiing and snowboarding at all in Chamonix.
That doesn’t mean you can’t take off in neighboring countries, and that’s exactly what Chamonix Heli Ski does.
Chamonix Heli Ski is a website created to promote Chamonix Sports Adventure, and is promoted by Franck Chapon, a guide who has been working in the Alps for 30 years. All that experience, presumably gives Franck and his associates the ability to choose the quality landing zones and descents for any group based on weather, conditions, and skiing level.
We have reviewed the Chamonix Heliski site, and we find the content decidedly thin compared to other "operators" around the globe. However, in reviewing Franck's mains site Chamonix Sport Aventure, we feel that there is "some personality" being displayed here, and that it's just enough to get a "pass" and justify a page on our site.
That said, you may want to do some due diligence when considering booking. Read our piece on "What REALLY is a Heli Skiing Company?"
Heli skiing Chamonix with Franck’s team starts by traveling to Chamonix, most commonly by flying into Geneva’s international airport and then making a quick 30-minute drive into town.
Heli skiing in Italy offers a diverse range of terrain and experiences - you can’t heliski Chamonix. Many skiers staying in Chamonix who want to go heli skiing, drive over the border into Courmayeur, which is only 40 minutes from Chamonix. Courmayeur is famous for its proximity and view of Mont Blanc, so it's a popular destination, even if you don't ski!
You could also heliski in Italy’s Valgrisenche where the terrain and snow could be mistaken for the Canadian Rockies. Chamonix Heli Ski also guides in La Thuile where they combine their heliskiing program with the popular resort there for a great introduction to heliskiing.
Franck at Chamonix Heliski keeps his prices relatively low, offering more economical packages to larger groups. For example, a group of 3 will pay more than a group of 4 or 5, so if you have friends who have always wanted to heliski then now is the time rally the crew!
They also keep the price down by offering discounted rentals if guests need them and provide all avalanche safety gear. If conditions do not allow for flight, then the guides will be happy to point you in the direction of other outdoor activities like resort skiing and snowboarding. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by one of the deepest mountain cultures in the world with plenty of places to celebrate it with an après in the Alps!
