Skeena Heliskiing Review
Founded in 2004, Skeena Heliskiing caught our attention in the fall of 2017...

At the time, they offered a rugged, yet economical backcountry heliskiing experience known as "Base Camp." At Heli-Skier we were just beginning our "random internet stumbles" to book a trip, and this setup was really unique! Out in the backcountry, they built a compound or collection of high-end, non-permanent geodesic domes that served as their heliskiing Base Camp to fly from...and to eat in, socialize in and sleep in! It was really cool!
Yet, on that trip, we did not choose to ski there...and we still have not skied at Skeena Heliskiing...but WE ARE BIG FANS...and it feels like the clock is ticking...gotta get there soon...
And typically, we at Heli-Skier, don't review an operator unless we have visited their operation and skied there. Recently we have made some exceptions, and in this circumstance with Skeena, we feel very comfortable with the review. Here's why:

To begin with, Skeena still maintains records of that original communication when we were interested in skiing there. The correspondence was lengthy and contained multiple substantive exchanges. The tone of their communication was anything but a sales pitch. To the contrary, we were very impressed with the educational and informational nature of that exchange. It represented true confidence in their product. They didn't need to sell it. It sells itself, and that has not changed.
What really gave us conviction...frankly creating an urgency for us to get up to the Skeena Mountains and visit this operator...was a recent, long Zoom call between Heli-Skier and Martin Wehren, President & G.M. of Skeena Heliskiing.
Several things in that conversation really left us with a satisfying "Rush of serotonin, wrapped in a warm blanket!" Hard to explain, right? We'll try...
First, and this is a BIG ONE...Skeena flies TWO A-Stars for their twelve 12 guests in thier Classic Package. (They only invite 12 guests each week - that's it.) Most larger operations will utilize multiple helicopters, each bird flying (3) three groups of (4) four skiers. When you "elevate" your ski package from that set up...to something more elite and boutique...your skiing / riding experience ascends one HUGE quantum leap! We'll elaborate.
We at Hel-Skier have flown with one operation that utilizes 2 A-Stars for just eight guests. Adding that additional helicopter makes a big difference! Two aircraft for 12 guests results in an "aircraft to guest ratio" of just 1:6, something that we measure. That's a big deal and it creates a much better experience.
The operation gets the guests out into the mountain in the morning much faster, So you don't have to in many cases take a shuttle to a staging area and wait for a pickup. This set up moves skiers around in the tenure with greater versatility and gets you back to the lodge more quickly. TWO Birds + 12 Guests = a Premium Experience! Frankly, this is the only operator that we are aware of with this unique set up of a 1:6 Ratio.
And that set up certainly propels the delivery on the real promise of of Unlimited Vertical. Now you have a proven recipe for a tremendous amount of quality heliskiing.
Martin has been at Skeena Heliskiing since 2011 and runs the business. And when you're running a business, you're accountable to the bottom line. The old saying is that, "You grow or die." There are certainly economic pressures on Martin to grow the business and his response is "Growth for growth's sake," is not necessarily the correct growth path.

Growth doesn't need to mean EXPENSION. Martin's influence was key to making the decision about adding the extra helicopter. He added significant additional expense saying, "You can actually grow a business by improving quality." That can translate into better employee retention and greatly improved repeat customer loyalty. These were topics and a surrounding sentiment communicated by Martin that we have not experienced with any of our operator relationships. His dialogue really came from the heart - it was pretty cool!
Obviously during our conversation, we talked a lot about core values and guest experiences. And one of elements that stood out to us is the way that Martin designs the guest dinner experience. The group is just large enough where he could easily exclude himself and exclude the guides from the dinner table, but he chooses to go the other direction. Guides are encouraged to dine with their guests, further bonding that guide - guest relationship. (If you have ever had a guide for longer than a couple days, you know how this fond relationship can easily develop.)
Martin's style creates an intangible glue from Operator -> Management -> Guides -> Guests -> Repeat Guests - a quality business principle. So when they talk about "family," they mean it. This unique perspective and operator culture shows up on their booking calendar. Very limited availability.

Either way...this is a heli-trip...and your journey to the Bear Claw Lodge will be a memorable part of the adventure!
Regardless of your perspective on the effort invested to arrive here...once you're at Bear Claw Lodge, the skiing is surprisingly close. Skeena describes its nearest run to be only six minutes by helicopter, with much of its terrain accessible within approximately 15 minutes.
For heli-skiers, proximity to the terrain can be VERY important. We have all had 20 minute flights from a heli lodge to a drop zone or the reverse.

Tell Me About the Terrain at Skeena Heliskiing

Every Heli-Skier LOVES an acrobatic A-Star departure from the cornice! - Photo: Courtesy of Skeena Heliskiing
With over 2.3 million acres, (9,525 square kilometers), Skeena Heliskiing is ranked as having the second largest heliskiing tenure in North America.
At Heli-Skier, we have enjoyed both locations run by the the operator which ranks number one in this category, having 2.5 million square acres of tenure, but that operation hosts at least 60 skiers a week! Those applying simple math might arrive at the conclusion that Skeena Heliskiing guests are each afforded five times the amount of tenure to enjoy in one single week! That's a lot of snow to explore...go ski it ALL! 🙂

IMAGINE...just you and three friends (new or old)...and the whole mountain to yourselves! Photo: Courtesy of Skeena Heliskiing
In their massive tenure, Skeena operates two A-Star helicopters, dropping off at over 280 different summits, allowing for over 360 runs to be explored.
These are BIG numbers - BIG STATS!
The Skeena Mountains are located at a longitude far enough North (specifically the lodge at 55.61° N) that temperatures are COLD, but close enough to the coast to take full advantage of the volumes of precipitation. This creates impeccable snow quality, dumping in copious amounts on average - 30 meters (100 feet) of annual snow fall! OH MAN THAT'S A TON OF SNOW!
Most of their skiing terrain can be found within a 15 minutes heli-lift from the lodge, often much closer.

Can you find a line in this terrain...anywhere? Photo: Courtesy of Skeena Heliskiing
And Skeena's set-up just gets better! All of their packages include Unlimited Vertical. This is a huge benefit and catapults the value of your experience by a quantum leap!
According to Skeena, the weekly average of vertical skied per guest is 118,000 feet (36,000 meters) on their Classic Unlimited Vertical Package, and jumps to 137,795 feet (42,000 meters) on their Two Group Unlimited Vertical Package.
With that size of tenure, as you can imagine, the terrain includes every type of feature & run composition that you would expect during this kind of trip. Features range from large alpine zones to steep vertical descents to wide open powder bowls, expansive glades...and everything in between! That variety of terrain gives guides an expanse of options to please any group and allow for variable visibility, snow stability and weather change throughout the week.

Get ready for an EXPERIENCE you'll never forget! Photo: Courtesy of Skeena Heliskiing
Most of Skeena Heliskiing’s packages feature 7 nights of accommodation with 6 days of skiing, with the exception of the Private Package which offers you 7 nights accommodation with 7 days of skiing. If you’re looking for a relaxing week-long adventure...with spectacular moments engrossed in high-energy and elation...this operator is for you! Day-trip heli-skiing is not available, so each and every guest at the lodge is dedicated to creating a week of meaningful experiences & memories!
Four distinct packages are available:
Classic Unlimited Vertical: Considered the “value option”, this package pairs you with other guests according to ability level. Three groups of four, each with their own guide. One B2/B3 helicopter is used while skiing, and 2 helicopters are used to get the groups in and out of the mountains.
2 Group Unlimited Vertical / Semi Private: If you want a little more access to the helicopter, this package limits skiing to two groups of four per helicopter.
Private Helicopter: This package entails exclusive access. You and up to three other people get private access to one chopper. This package gives you access to 11 heli hours included
Private Lodge Buyout: For those seeking ultimate privacy, this package allows you to buyout the entire lodge & operation. You do not need all 12 people to completely book the lodge. The week runs very similarly to the Classic Unlimited Vertical package, but exclusive for your group only.
At Heli-Skier, we prefer fewer groups sharing the helicopter - a Semi Private set up. You'll typically get more skiing in, with a faster rhythm throughout the day and a more high energy vibe. Obviously this result is going to be somewhat weather dependent. It also requires a nice synergy between the 4+4 skiers. One or two skiers could potentially slow down a group, and one group could slow down the other group. However, in our experience, the skiers that typically book these packages are expert skiers / riders and want to charge pretty hard.
What is included in the packages?
Skeena Heliskiing is delighted to make your heli-week more easily enjoyable by including:
- 7 Nights at Bear Claw Lodge - your beautifully crafted "heli-home away from home" located on and a pristine river in the B.C. wilderness
- Double occupancy - limited single occupancy upgrades available
- At least Two A-Star Helicopters, right outside the front door!
- Highly experienced helicopter pilots
- Professional heliskiing guides and lodge staff
- All gourmet meals and après ski snacks
- Kastle powder Skis (Snowboarders bring your own board.)
- Safety Equipment: (pack, beacon, probe, shovel)
- Ground transfers from airport

What Activities Are Available if The Helicopters Are Unable to Fly?
In the event of inclement weather, or if the helicopters are grounded for any reason...

Canadians take their hockey pretty seriously, but I hear that They go easy on the guests! Photo: Courtesy of Skeena Heliskiing
EVERYONE PLAYS HOCKEY! Nah...we're just kidding...not everyone! But it does look like fun, especially if they have knee pads and elbow pads for us!
Other Fun Activities Include:
Ice skating (without a hockey stick & puck!) lol
Cross Country Skiing along the river valleys (Skeena does provide powder skis but not a Nordic set up.)
Snow Shoe Exploration (ask the lodge) on winter paths, taking in the Kispiox River
Games Room activities: Pool, Foosball, Darts...Beer drinking 🙂
Ready to View Trips?
If you see a trip you like, we suggest that you jump on it right away! Skeena Heliskiing has a limited calendar that is typically booked out well in advance, with only 12 guests per week. If you manage to find an opening, we can assure you it won't last long.
What we like about Skeena is that the pieces fit together.
You've got a massive northern BC tenure, four-person groups, serious terrain, excellent powder potential, unlimited vertical on most programs, and a lodge limited to around 12 guests.
It isn't trying to be the biggest operation in terms of guest numbers. Quite the opposite. Skeena takes an enormous amount of terrain and gives a relatively small number of skiers access to it.
We see the sweet spot as strong intermediate through expert skiers and snowboarders who are comfortable off-piste and want a full week built around skiing rather than a resort vacation with heli-skiing added on.
If you value small groups, big terrain and the freedom to keep skiing when conditions are firing, Skeena Heliskiing belongs on your northern BC shortlist.
With its MASSIVE tenure, literally about half the size of Switzerland and its Bear Claw Lodge, Skeena Heliskiing has a considerable value proposition for avid hel-skiers. Take a hard look and consider booking.
